Re: whats a good welder
All of them, 1/8" or .125" isn't that thick.
Google welders and read/learn all you can, The welder (machine) has something to do with it but for proper penetration and strucural integrity for safety as well as appearance, more is determined by the other welder (person). |

Re: whats a good welder
I use a Lincoln 180, great little mig, also have a spoolgun that is reasonably priced compared to miller. Bottle of 100%argon and you're welding aluminum!!

I'm a fan of the Lincoln welders. I sell welders for a living (kinda). and Ican compare them side by side.

Re: whats a good welder
Its true that they "all" will weld 1/8 inch plate, but some will do it much better than others. For 1/8 inch I would not buy a machine of less than 140 amps. A smaller machine has to work harder at the higher settings than a larger one. If the thickest is 1/8 buy a machine that can weld thicker, because it never fails that you will need it to do a bit more and wish you had spent a few extra dallars on a bigger unit. Duty cycle is also important, its the amount of time the unit can be continuously ran without stopping to let it cool down. The higher the duty cycle the better. As far as brands are concerned, stick with name brands..Lincoln, Miller, Hobart, because parts will be easy to get. Craftsman, Century and snap-on and some of the others are made by Lincoln electric and are also pretty good. Do not buy Harbor frieght or other "tool company" units, they are junk and parts will be obsolete in no time. If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them, I have been a professional weldor for 20+ years.
