Default Discolored aluminum?

All-

I have cut out a piece of aluminum for my new dash. The idea is to damascene (engine turn) the whole thing for a really trick look. It has not been an easy road.

1st I tried a wooden dowel with rubbing compound. I saw someone do this on YouTube with good results, but the dowel wouldn't track straight, so it didn't make a complete circle and ended up making some circles darker than others.

I then tried a 1/2" graphite rod, but it did not have enough bite to make a difference. I finally bought a demascening kit from Eastwood, which comes with two 1/2" bits of rubber impregnated with metal. The first few passes looked good, but after the third row the circles were darker, I am assuming from the heat. I am taking a half hour at least between rows, and I haven't changed the pressure (VERY light- one finger) or dwell time (about 7 seconds), yet every circle makes the metal dark grey. I tried to clean it with soap and water, but no change. I tried a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar to water, no change. I tried an aluminum cleaner gel, no change. At this point I am committed to this whole dash (11 rows so far), and if it comes out dark, so be it. Just thought I'd check on here to see if there was a remedy for heat discolored aluminum I have not thought of.
