got a Stanley charger 6v ~ 48v
i usually don't sing the pareses of products but this b***h works great !!! People on here have bought those in the past and have had problems with them after a couple of months.

I bought one for my 2005 ezgo 48v conversion and sold it after 2 days. While it says 20 amp charger it has fine print that states amp output goes down at higher voltages. I only saw 10 amps MAX while charging my 48v cart. That meant it didn't finish charging OVERNIGHT, in fact it took 14-16 hours to charge my already broke-in 8-6v trojans in my 48v 2005 txt. Not acceptable to me.

Golf Cart batteries require 10% of their capacity during the bulk rate charge. Less amperage will not get the heavy elements off the bottom of the battery where they will soon permanently reside. This will shorten the battery life.
Three Stage Battery Charging The BULK stage involves about 80% of the recharge, wherein the charger current is held constant (in a constant current charger), and voltage increases. The properly sized charger will give the battery as much current as it will accept up to charger capacity (25% of battery capacity in amp hours), and not raise a wet battery over 125° F, or an AGM or GEL (valve regulated) battery over 100° F. The ABSORPTION stage (the remaining 20%, approximately) has the charger holding the voltage at the charger's absorption voltage (between 14.1 VDC and 14.8 VDC, depending on charger set points) and decreasing the current until the battery is fully charged. Some charger manufacturers call this absorption stage an equalization stage. We don't agree with this use of the term. If the battery won't hold a charge, or the current does not drop after the expected recharge time, the battery may have some permanent sulphation. The FLOAT stage is where the charge voltage is reduced to between 13.0 VDC and 13.8 VDC and held constant, while the current is reduced to less than 1% of battery capacity. This mode can be used to maintain a fully charged battery indefinitely. |

i can't argue with scotty about the charge needed for a carts batteries
but it does go to a high amp then lower after charging , then goes in to float mode i love this for getting low batteries up so a good charger can take over have used it a dozen times this summer for carts to my jeep |

I don't recommend it for 48v applications. It only outputs 10 amps MAX at 48v on the bulk charge. Takes FOREVER and as Scotty pointed out you need 10% of battery rating for proper charge (i.e. 180AH 8v batteries need 18 amps).

As SC points out the main concern here is low amp output and in line with that is the concern for a proper GC battery charging algorithm.
Without properly structured charging the battery plates will sulfate and the water mixture will stratify if you are not getting a gassing charge. It might work fine and you may not know the results of using a low power charger for 2 or 3 years? I'm certain if the cart industry engineers thought they could successfully use a less expensive micro processor type charger they would have jumped on this technology - good example is the Ezgo QE charger. Goggle that little gem and see what people saying. My local dealer has a pile of failed QE chargers out back. Yet there is no a pile of transformer type chargers. I hope this helps. |
