I have a similar model to the one you bought-- I got it last year, and am pretty pleased with it! My only complaint is it won't get hot enough for thicker metals; but for thinner stuff it's great. ;)

Over 1/8" thick,I'd be careful,3/16" is likely the max. They aren't a very high amperage unit.

Re: flux core welder at harbor freight for $99
I had one for a while since it was easy to carry around and my Ironman 210 is not... It works quite well. The flux core runs hotter so it is easier to burn through thinner metals but it does work to burn through rust and scale. It was quite useful and for the price it was worth it. Flux core wire is a tad expensive.
I forgot to mention, I used it mostly on .120 wall mild steel and for various repairs. Penetration was good as long as I did not go much thicker. |

Re: flux core welder at harbor freight for $99
I bought one before I got my "real" welder. It actually worked preetty well. Do yourself a favor and buy some better wire and a can of anti-spatter. I had much better results after I switched from the HF flux core wire and after coating everything around where I was welding with the anti-spatter. The flux core wire makes a mess. Much easier to deal with if you coat around the welded area.
All in all they are pretty decent little welders for $100. |

Throw the HF wire out and go to lowes and buy some .035 Lincoln Fluxcore wire... you'll have a 100% noticable difference in quality of weld...
#2 set your shop up with a dedicated 20 amp outlet now your lil HF welder will be up to par with a ... never mind .... almost -=Fred=- |

Re: flux core welder at harbor freight for $99
DITTO! My little welder has held up to 4 years of part time service. I use that thing almost weekly for my golf cart, kids go kart, tractor, mower, snow plow, truck, trailer, and whatever else I can get my hands on. I actually have welded 1/4" with this thing, you should see how good the welds are on that one, LOL. Mostly for tubing, sheet metal, thin angle, and stuff that doesn't need to look that good. Works great, but I think I have outgrown it's capabilities. My next purchase will be a dual voltage 120v/240v mig setup.

Re: flux core welder at harbor freight for $99
I have a Hobart 220v welder and use the HF wire all the time. I get real good results using the HF wire with this welder.
Guess that could be due to the higher amerage of my welder. I also like the HF wire due to the price. Nothing wrong with a good $99 welder to learn to weld, but eventually I'm sure you'll want to move on to something a bit better. |

Re: flux core welder at harbor freight for $99
I used to have a Century Mig that is real close to the HF. It kept going out cause wouldnt take the heat I guess. Had to send it out to be fixed . Most all are 80/20 use . No long term welding have to let them cool.I now have a Hobart 135 . It has Miller leads and is a lot better welder . Has a cut off if it gets hot . Never had it do that tho. I made an adaptor to use the bigger spools of wire rather than the small ones. Will take gas if I wanted to.
Use anti splatter will make welds stick and look better. |
