Pipe Bender!
I used a 12 ton Harbor Freight pipe bender to make the brush guard for my G1. While I have to say it did work and made a good looking brush guard it was a pain. Anyone that has used one, especially on thick wall pipe knows that to keep from kinking the pipe you have to bend and move the pipe quite a few times. It's a major pain when you have to keep releasing and pumping the hydraulic jack back up on the bender.
So, I'm looking at the new wood splitter my wife talked me into buying last winter and thinking about it being hydraulic and how easy it is to move back and forth. I was also thinking about how the splitter would be setting all summer without being used. So I then got a plan in my head. I'd remove the jack from the bender and adapt it to work on the splitter. But I had to make it fit on without making changes to the splitter as I still want to be able to use it during the winter for my heating wood. (And the wife would kill me if I screwed up the splitter. I decided that winter is finally over so a couple days ago took the blade off the splitter. (Only one bolt holds it on.) and got to work. It took me about 4 hours to do all the work and get it working. It wouldn't have taken me so long but the first try didn't go so well. It worked great on thin wall stuff but when I tried it on the thick walled stuff the bracing that is on the bender ended up being what bent. So I rethought it and did a lot more bracing and this time it worked like a charm. I can change from a splitter to the pipe bender in about 10 minutes and back in about the same time. I have it made so it just slides right into place and isn't bolted. Only thing i have to use to hold it tight is two C clamps and those aren't really needed, I just added them for my own peace of mind. So now I ended up with a 22 ton pipe bender, although I won't be overdoing it. Now I can bend pipe in many sizes and wall thicknesses quickly and easily and it looks good when I'm done. I know if there aren't pics it didn't happen, but I'll try to get some posted up tomorrow. |

Pictures please. Sounds like a great item. No kinking with the splitter?
