Default Drive Belt Size Confusion

I recently bought a 96 CC DS with the 290 engine. The cart is stock, however, the engine had been rebuilt by GT rebuilds before I bought it. For the most part the cart runs well, but when pressing the accelerator, there isn't much movement between the cart idling and the drive engaging, so initial take off can be abrupt.

I was looking at the drive belt and there isn't much free play. The belt on the cart is a BLT-0005. I've looked at several sites and there are a few sizes listed for the CC 92 and up carts. I've seen the stock belt for the 92 listed as a 1" x 37 1/2" or 1" x38 1/2", depending upon which site I've searched. I've also seen a listing for a 92 and up ohv that shows a belt size of 1"x 31 1/2".

i took a string and ran it around my belt and it measured right at 37 1/2".

My question is, is there truly a belt that measures 38 1/2" and would this give me the proper slack in the belt so that the clutch does not engage so quickly. Also, info on the different sizes would be helpful.

Also, it is my understanding there is no slack adjustment for the drive belt, correct?
Thanks

Bob

I would go with the belt closest to your string measurement. As far as belt adjustment, you should be able to loosen the bolts at the base of the motor and move it back a bit if your belt is too tight. I'm not 100% sure about the newer carts, but my '87 has long (oval) motor mount holes so that this adjustment can be done, I can't imagine that the newer carts wouldn't have that option.

Welcome to BGW Bob!

Drive belt sizes for a Club Car DS model...

1984-87) 15/16" X 37 1/4"
1988-91) 1" X 37 1/2"
1992 + ) 1" X 37 3/8"

There isn't a lot of difference between all of those!
Kind of funny... my 2007 uses the 88-91 belt!
(It was designed as a hunting vehicle... a slightly shorter belt means more torque!)

Here's the deal...
Club car made some pretty drastic changes for the DS in 1992, again in 1996, and some again in 2000,
BUT... it seems that one thing didn't change... the distance between the drive, and driven clutches!
It should be 9 5/8" Center to Center!

That being said... I think Springbok may be on the right track!
I don't exactly know when CC changed the engine pan from tubular, to stamped metal, (97? 98? 99?)
With a tubular engine pan, you can adjust the center to center of the clutches,
with a stamped engine pan.... you can't! (except by changing the spacers)
the transaxle is thru-bolted to the engine.

At least that's a start, and it gives you an idea what to look for!

If you still have the same problem after readjusting the distance of the clutches,
I just thought of something else the "abrupt" start out could be... (worn drive clutch buttons)

Readjust the distance and reply back so we know how it worked for you!

Not to hijack your thread, Bob but I have the opposite problem going on. I get a really jumpy start. Almost a bump, bump bump and go, if you will. I have a new carb, rebuilt drive clutch that was machined by Tom at CPP (great business BTW )and torque spring in the driven clutch. The belt feels like it slips and pops a little on take off then runs fine. The clutches spin fine in maintenance mode and no sudden engagement. If I'm riding in lots of water, it won't do it because I'm sure the belt is slippery and wont catch as hard. After reading Lockman1's replies, I feel like my motor may be too far forward and not TIGHT ENOUGH. I have not measured clutch shafts center-to-center but does this sound like what's wrong with mine, Lockman?

Edited to add: Can I tighten it too much? I would like to have the stronger engagement like Bob has WITHOUT the bumpy jumpy start.

OK Bob, you can have your thread back now, HA!!

I too am confused on the PROPER belt size for my 1994 CC gas 290. I know the manufacturer appears to say 37 3/8" X 1".

However, if I punch in drive belt for the cart above on google and look at several different suppliers I will see a number of different belt sizes all saying they "fit" my cart. For instance, I looked at a belt from Buggies Unlimited and their belt for this cart is 38 1/2" X 1". That is over an inch longer!!!

What am I supposed to do? I'd kind of like a severe duty belt but what size??

Any thoughts appreciated and any explanation as to why so many different sizes belt for the same cart would really be helpful..

I just bought this belt for a 2000 Club Car. Worked great. Out of curiousity I did slap it onto my 1990 Club Car and it was too tight. The cart wanted to move as soon as the starter/gen started spinning, probably exactly what drewbaby88 was experiencing in his post above.
