Correct Compression for 94' FE 290
Can someone please help me with what the correct compressions should be for a 1994 FE 290? I took the reading twice, once with it cold and then again with it hot, both readings were dead on 150 psi. I have read on here that 150 or below is cause for concern. If this is the case, should I start to think about a rebuild or buying a remanufactured engine? The engine is original and is extremely clean, no oil leaks, starts right up every time. I appreciate all the help.

150psi is pretty darn good for a 94!
165psi is spec'd when the engine is brand new On my buddies 94, his cart was having problems climbing the hill from my camper... it really struggled, he did a compression test on his and it varied from 135 to 140, 5 years later, that cart is still running really well! Unless it smoking, or knocking... I'd say leave it alone! .02 |

Thanks LOCKMAN1, I think the next step will be a fuel pump and carb, I hate to throw parts at it, but that is cheap enough that it shouldn't hurt that bad. I appreciate the response.

One other thing how is your oil consumption? How does your plug look?

raydhd,
oil doesn't look bad, when I pulled the plug out to check compression, it was bone dry, getting a good spark, up to 1/4" when I checked it. I will change the oil before the spring time just to do so, but in terms of it being burnt, it didn't look bad at all. |

I mean't were you adding much oil.I have noticed sometimes before they start smoking some engines started needing oil added at an increased rate.I'm guessing in that case the engine is burning oil but not enough for visable smoke. But since your plug was clean and dry that may not be the case.
