I saw that the other day when searching fe290 rebuild.
Looks easy enough but what about longevity?

it surely would beat the wear of the little friction discs of the buggies unlimited type. They said theirs are hardened steel but that would put more stress on the rest of the spider gears. The question would be can the spider gears take the extra pressure.

Good question.....
But he does say they slip at around 75#s so that isn't much

To be honest... that's the only aftermarket one I've seen besides the BU setup!

I kinda like it!

I don't think the wear would be bad. I wonder if you still would use limited slip oil or not??
Gears should hold up good unless big HP is added maybe....
Wonder if they can do other makes of carriers??

I bet it'll work n others as its just a shim behind the side spider gears.
Also limited slip additive is for clutches to slip more, not grab more.

Ya I get the fiber clutches need to slip so they don't wear out faster.... I wonder if there is wear on the thrust washers or the carrier and with that pressure maybe they would want them to slip a little.
Yes they are 50 Rockwell but what Rockwell is the carrier .. something has to wear so that is why I asked about any special oil modifier if any was needed.
I have a guy that has done gears for many of us for 30+ years... I'll half to ask him what he thinks of this poor mans posi setup.

I talked to our gear guy and he said about 1980 a car mag did a .99 cent posi read. He said you put in 1 thick spacer and "pack" one side gear tight. He did it on his Early Bronco and drove it 2 years before he tore it down to check what was wearing. What wore was the gears! ..... It would mark both tires on the street and still did allow smooth turning on the street. His mod acted more like a spool off road.... Maybe this kit will allow different tire speeds for turning off road in low traction surfaces easier too??

BUT He also said it worked great and this mod with 2 spacers each side made more since and that most the slippage should be between the thrust washers not against the carrier....so in a cart it will last a LONG time he thought.

He said he did not think the gears would wear as bad as he saw because it did not sound like they are packing the gears as hard as his single thick washer did. He also said it can be done on most any diffs.... just have to figure out proper thickness for both and have them ground and get them to the proper hardening level.

I say go for it!

"I'll half to ask"
Yes I can speel.... And do spell words different at times to show humor but missed this.... I wanted ta say "have to"
