Has anyone seen 10:1 high speed gears? Are they any good? Have Link to craigslist ad.
What would a set of 10:1 gears do to a gas, lifted DS with 23" tires? No other speed modifications.
I may zip tie the gov. A little bit that would be it. http://florencesc.craigslist.org/snw/5108794594.html |

that's roughly a 17% change from the stock 12 to 1.
Whatever your speed is now, multiply it by 1.17 for the theoretical difference. On uphill grades with fat friends on board, expect less speed difference. 8-) Your switch to 23 inch tall tires most likely resulted in a much bigger top speed increase than you can expect from these gears. HTH |

If you're only going to zip tie the gov "a little bit", then why the gears? Your torque has been reduced with the bigger tires, and the HS gears will reduce it more.

I was thinking it may give a reduction of rpm, making it safe on the engine. And then maybe install a torque kit.
But I'm new to this, I may be completely wrong. I think he may be unsure of the gear ratio. He said he went from 12-14 to 20-22mph on an electric. If that's correct that's probably 6:1 isn't it. I can't find 10:1 gears online any where. |

I wouldn't bother with the gears. You're gonna need to zip tie the gov all the way to get the best performance. With 23" tires you should probably be around 25 mph, at least. Get a tach, and listen to the engine at speed. You won't blow it up unless you really abuse it...

First, while I'm wary of seller claims as a rule, that does sound like a 6:1 setup.
Next, I agree with Dave in VA. Keep clean oil in it, and you should be okay w/ the added RPM. My DS has been over 12 years with no governor. Back on track, regarding gear ratios (while ignoring variables like drag coefficient), here my calcs assuming stock tire and 12HPH top speed: [gear now] / [proposed gear] x [MPH now] = [MPH w/proposed Gear] 12 / 10 x 12mph = 14.40 MPH 12 / 9 x 12mph = 16.00 MPH 12 / 8 x 12mph = 18.00 MPH 12 / 7 x 12mph = 20.57 MPH 12 / 6 x 12mph = 24.00 MPH HTHs. |
