A common problem for a "no spark" scenario, is a failing rev limiter!

On the lower front of the engine, you'll see a little box (rev limiter) with 2 mounting bolts, left and right,
there is a ground wire tied to the left (pass side) mounting bolt,
remove the bolt, remove the eye loop from the bolt, reinstall the bolt, and tape up the eye loop!

As long as your governor hasn't been tampered with, you should be safe running it without the rev limiter!
(as long as you don't go down a long, steep hill at full throttle)

Have you looked behind the dash at the original key switch wiring?
It may be not connecting properly or grounding out...

Here's a key switch wiring diagram when yours come in!
