Default symptoms of a bad starter generator

picked up an 86 club car. gas engine. having an issue with it turning over. if I put a 12v jump pack directly on the positive and negative of the starter it will barely tuen over the engine and then stops on the compression stoke and hums. it has good brushes in it and I sanded the armature lightly to clean it up. that's the extent of my knowledge on the starter itself. should I replace it or look into something else? the engine can be spun by hand so it isn't locked up. any ideas?

well, its not the brushes, I swapped those out about an hour ago. still with direct power on the starter it barely turns the engine over.

are the valves out of adjustment, I had an issue with a motor (B&S) and it wouldn't crank good or it was slow, I thought it was the starter and replaced it, still had the problem, turned out to be the valves were out of adj.

it spins easy by hand if you pull on the belt so I don't think so

Maybe the jump pack isn't strong enough... have you tried jumper cables from a running vehicle?

Your jump pack usually assist a battery if your going direct without the battery, I'm with lockman1 it might not be strong enough. I have a 250 amp jump starter and had an issue with a lawn tractor where it would not crank unless there was a battery attached to it even though the battery was almost dead. Strange and unexplainable things do happen.

I know all about these "wonderful winters"!
I've had jump packs, and they never seemed to be as good as jumper cables to a good battery, and an alternator backing it up!
I've dealt with Chevy 1 ton diesel plow trucks in winter... never fun when the batteries take a dump!
