10hp Briggs swap with it

I have this 10hp Briggs motor on generator low hours. I currently have a 1988 club can ds. With some motor problems that I'm planing on fixing. My questions are this what would it take to make this 10hp Briggs work and would it be worth it. The original motor out of the cart was plenty for what I do so would this compare?

Yes it would be very similar. Worth it? IMO, no. Lots of fab work to get the same exact thing you already have. I would look for a replacement engine first. My co-worker just picked up 3 complete golf carts for $100 each from a golf course. Had one running in 20 minutes.

We sometimes use what we have. So the 10hp will work and should give you decent speed, on level ground. Not sure how it would work on any hills or when your in need of torque.

I put an 8hp Briggs in my cart at one time and while it did ok, it wasn't near enough. Hills brought it to a crawl almost. It was a lot of work and when I was done I still had an under powered cart with no real pulling power. It also quickly took it's toll on the engine trying too keep up speed.


With all the fab work necessary too change the engine I'd look for something different. To install the engine you'll have to make, have made a crank adapter, make the engine mounting plate, exhaust and many other things. I'd look at something better, be it a clone or a V-twin. You can make just about any engine work. There are people using Vanguard, Kohler, Honda and I even installed a 25hp Kawasaki in mine.

OK thanks for the input I'll continue to work on this one and keep my eye open for a new motor now in terms of a bigger motor am I looking for something like off a lawn mower??

Keep your eye out on craigslist for lawn mowers with Horizontal shaft engines. Some Cub Cadets came out with the Briggs Vanguard V-twin. If you watch you can sometimes pick up the entire mower for less than buying just the engine.

A motor that has a horizontal crank shaft will work like off a zero turn mower. A conventional lawn tractor motor with the vertical shaft crank won't work.

I know I needed a horizontal shaft just wasn't sure if everyone was getting them from mowers or what not my father in law buys and sells lawn mowers so finding a good motor shouldn't be to hard plus he will have replacement parsin stock witch would be good. On the other hand will it take a lot over and above the motor to make it work cost and time wise?? Will I need a new clutch and a new exhaust? Can it still be run off the petal or would it have to be key start?

Is a honda gx620 a viable swap it looks like 1 1/8 shaft?? Where can i get a clutch for it? And an exhaust??

The Honda's make good engines, they run for a long time, and the one you are talking about should have tons of torque. You can get a clutch and an exhaust from CPP I believe.

A couple things:

1. the crank....you'll want to remove it and have it machined to 1", or you'll have trouble finding a clutch. There are lots of options for 1", just not too many for 1 1/8".

2. Rev limiter....the Honda's have a rev limit built in and you won't be able to take it above a certain point, something like 4200 rpm or so. Some of these Hondas you cannot disable it, no way around it. With a lift and 22" tires your top speed will be in the 25-28 mph range. Not that bad, but if you intend to go faster, look for a different engine, or plan on getting 8:1 gears in the transaxle.
