I have a 1987 club car DS that has a pretty intense valve tick sounds like the exhaust valve I replaced both valves intake and exhaust lap them in to .004 and the valve still has a tick any input would be greatly appreciated

Re: Valve tick Kawasaki flathead 341
When you did this adjustment, did you make sure the piston was at top dead center? Without this, you could have set them at .004 but it could be different at top dead center. Just a suggestion.

Re: Valve tick Kawasaki flathead 341
Correct me if I'm wrong. I was not aware there was adjustable valve lash in the flathead engine. It's been many years since I have had one of these apart but, I seem to recall valve lash was set with shims not adjustable like modern engines?

Re: Valve tick Kawasaki flathead 341
Thank you, Tom
I rebuilt only one of these years ago. I scratched my head for awile trying to figure out how to adjust the valves I got this motor in a box with a .050 over piston. We bored out the cylinder and shaved the head .010. That ran like a raped ape and pulled hills like a tractor - great little motor. |

Re: Valve tick Kawasaki flathead 341
Correct there is no adjustment on them short from pulling them out grinding them from our cla there is no adjustment on them short from pulling them out grinding them for more clearance which what I had to do Is it possible the Springs got weak from being taken off and put mom to many times the car ran fine when I first got it but it turned over really slow like there was too much compression come to find out it was bad starter generator arrest and Sarah place the valves and left come to find out it was bad starter generator arrest and Sarah place the valves and lappEd them and I can use a stethoscope on on the exhaust port and narrow it down to a ticking on the exhaust side

Re: Valve tick Kawasaki flathead 341
The noise might not be your valves. A few months before my cart's motor blew (a 1987 Club Car just like yours) the motor sounded like it had an exhaust leak you would hear from a leaky manifold gasket in a car (I initially thought it to be a hole in the muffler). Then it got louder and louder. Looking back I could have described it as a ticking noise. You may just be in the early stages of your connecting rod coming loose and planning its exit, this is fairly common with these motors after 20+ years of running.
