Default A quick Starter/Gen question

97 + CW Fe350 the yellow wire coming off the starter/gen should carry 14+volts yes? Recently replaced this not sure if it does yet but my feelings are with a multi meter I should see voltage at this point

That yellow wire is a control wire from the voltage regulator to the generator. The regulator selectively grounds that lead to engage the generator. In fact that's how I test the system with a charging problem: disconnect that yellow lead at the generator, run a jumper from that terminal on the generator to ground. If it max's out the generator (16+ volts) the regulator is the problem, if it still doesn't charge it's a generator problem.

Ok meimk trying to follow, disconnect yellow control wire at generator, then run that terminal to ground go back to battery and I should get 16v across if I do its a regulator problem, if I don't its a generator problem?

What an easy to understand test (if I understood it correctly LOL)

What I didn't mention, but you probably understand, is you need to run the engine momentarily to get that charging voltage.

The test meimk posted is exactly what the CC manual says to do!
It tests the S/G with the voltage regulator out of the loop,

I do it the lazy mans way...
read the voltage at the battery without it running,
Start it in maintenance mode, part to full throttle...
if the voltage holds steady around 15.3 volts, the charging system is doing it's job!
(It may not be "by the book", but it's always worked for me!!)

yeah been that method for years and tried it on this stayed at like 12.4 never moved and since I use the "key start" it takes a long time to run the battery down to where I have to charge it and since I have a permanent charger mounted under the seat I would plug it in charge it and forget about checking the why's until the next time but I am determined to fix it correctly because my daughter has been using it a lot at night with her friends and I don't want her stuck somewhere because I am to lazy to fix it correctly lol

Ok I finally had the time to run this test and did it as instructed and unfortunately there was no change at the battery voltage wise 12.43/45. Is there anything else I should be trying? To be honest I am fairly certain it hasn't worked since it was installed February charging wise, starter wise its flawless. I have a really cool battery charger permanently installed so all I gotta be is close to an outlet which made me lazy about checking this out. So before I call the company that sold me the starter/generator I want to make sure I've done everything I could and that it could be something else after disconnecting the the yellow control wire and then grounding that terminal and testing the voltage at the battery?

That's really it. Running that ground jumper straight
t to the terminal on the starter/generator bypasses the voltage regulator and the wiring between it and the s/g. Only thing left is the starter/generator itself.
