01 DS won't take fuel
I've got an 01 DS with an FE 290, I've replaced the entire fuel system except the tank and the pickup. The issue is that it starts fine but for some reason it will bog and not take any fuel. Runs great when it runs, but then without warning it will lay over and stop running, then a strong gas smell like it flooded. Any ideas will be great, I'm at my wits end.

Re: 01 DS won't take fuel
So I assume you've replaced the carb? Your problem sounds like a needle/seat in the float bowl sticking open or clogged with debris and not letting the carb regulate the fuel level.

Re: 01 DS won't take fuel
Spark is good, even with everything new I did notice that there is debris in the primary filter so my next step is to pull the tank and flush it and everything else

Re: 01 DS won't take fuel
try this, clean debris around plug and pull it. Then hit the accelerator and watch for a fine mist of fuel to come out of the plug hole. if you have mist coming out, its getting fuel into the cylinder and as such, your either not getting enough air or compression since you already checked the spark is good.. Run a compression test and check your airbox to make sure the choke isnt stuck. Try running it without the intake tube on. If you dont see a mist, pull the fuel line off the carb and turn the engine over, fuel should flow out of the line when the engine turns over. if no fuel comes out, you must have a clog in your fuel line or vacuum line. If fuel does come out, check your valve clearances to make sure theyre opening and closing properly. Have you tried starting fluid yet? If so, does it start and die?

Re: 01 DS won't take fuel
The secondary fuel filter is full so fuel does run out. I've tried it without the air box hose attached and it still will not start. When it does run it runs like it always has so I don't feel likes its a compression or valve issue.

Id still check the valves... Its not hard and if you wanna find the issue you have to do process of elimination...

Re: 01 DS won't take fuel
Is the carburetor float chamber vent tube still attached? It would be the small diameter see through plastic tube that runs from a port on the carb (next to the mix screw) and down to the frame rail. I've seen those get plugged by mud and road debris and cause all manner of problems. Just a thought. But yes I've seen all kinds of things (seeds, dead bugs, rubber from rotten gas cap seals) in the fuel tank plug up the pick up tube. Good luck.

Re: 01 DS won't take fuel
Have you checked the pickup tube for cracks? Have you adjusted the carb jet setting? How about the float height? Any chance the carb float was improperly installed and is getting hung up on something?
Does it run good when cold but die when hot? That would point to your coil. Also, is your spark weak or strong? A weak spark caused the problems you're describing on my lawn boy. You need a good spark, not just any spark. For what it's worth, I was having problems running extremely rich when I first got my cart. I fixed it by lowering the float height and replacing the air filter. |
