Default What year is my FE290D-AS17

I recently bought a train wreck. This was someone's hack job but it was calling to me to be rescued. I was told it was a 2004. It is a club car DS... at least according to the SN. The SN starts with AG9329. 1993? that's a far cry from a 2004. Maybe that's just the body. I have done a ton of work to this thing so far, always buying parts for "97 & up". My drive clutch shattered last night and I want to make sure I'm using the right replacement parts. FE290D-AS17 FE290D394941 is on my engine sticker. Can you tell what year it is with that info? Am I correct that the body is a 1993?

A= DS
G= Gas
93= 1993
29= week of manufacture

Yes... your frame is a 93 (lots of upsides with that, installing a big block, etc.)
and No... you can't tell the engine year by that tag!

I'm not sure if the earlier FE engines have a tag on the back side of the engine cowl like my 07 does,
because, THAT has the manufacture date on it!

In most cases, the cowl tag is not viewable unless you turn, or remove the engine.

IF... the previous owner told you it was a 2004, he didn't know any better,
HOWEVER... if he replaced the complete drivetrain from a 2004,
the easiest way to tell if it's original or not, is by checking the rotation of the drive clutch...
if the drive clutch rotates counter-clockwise, it's the original engine,
If it rotates clockwise, it's been replaced with a newer engine!

A pic of the engine pan, and transaxle (driven clutch area) would be helpful!
(Something like this... if you have one)

It spins clockwise if I'm looking at the bolt.

The first one was fine!

You have a unitized transaxle... which means the drivetrain came out of something newer! (2004)
When ordering anything for the engine or transaxle, you'll need 97+ parts!
The front suspension might be pre-97, (metal bearing caps)
If not? They will be black plastic caps (97+)
otherwise, there's not a huge difference with anything else!

Great, thank you very much for your help. I do have metal dust caps for the bearings up front.

I just noticed something in your pics...
Your clutches are REALLY close together!
It seems that the PO rewelded the leaf spring perches to tilt the transaxle towards the engine!

SOooo... don't order a standard Club Car drive belt, because it will be too long!
You'll have to measure it, to replace it! (and by the looks of it? it may need replacing some time soon!)

Yes, definitely needs to be replaced. Might drive clutch shattered last night while I was a couple blocks away from home and it tore up my belt pretty good. Unfortunately I have already ordered the clutch, drive belt, and starter/generator belt. Do you think I could take it up to the local authorities auto
parts store and see what they can do?

I just answered my own question... took the belt off and realized that this is definitely not something the part store is going to carry. From center bolt of the drive clutch to the center of the bolt on the driven clutch it is around 10 inches. The angle of the picture may have made it look pretty close but I don't know what the standard distance is.

Drive clutch bolt, to driven clutch bolt, center to center, should be 9-5/8"
so maybe the angle of the pic is an optical illusion!
