Default Fe290 sooo... slow!

So I put a lot of time in this 97 club car ds, painted it, lifted it and ect, ect... It handles great and ok in grassy trails, but getting to trails and anywhere else on a road it's just way to slow... I tried zip tie on governor that seemed to help at first but idk.. the more I tighten the spring it seems to backfire.. I haven't tried adjusting valves or any clutch work - how much speed should i be at with this little crappy motor with 22" tires? Also, any advise on a engine upgrade that's not a 2 stroke snowmobile engine and does not cost upwards of 2k? I am not a fabricator or welder but I can take anything apart and put it back together :) . Any ideas? I'd like to get this slug to do at least 30 mph..

I'll look into that 460. Ill prob end up getting something like that.. just seems like there should be a motor out there that would be more economical... 2k for basically a riding lawn mower engine that I would have to install just seems high to me idk..

Put bigger tires on it if you haven't. That's one sure way to increase your top speed. You'll lose a small amount on the low end but it's well worth it in my opinion. The larger diameter of the tires will allow for the higher speed. My 1987 cart has the stock 8hp KF82 motor (1hp less than your FE290 motor) and my cart will do 22mph top speed (which feels really fast in an open golf cart). I have a 6" lift and 22.5" diameter tires. If you are already running large tires but are still having speed issues even after zip-tying the governor then there must be some other issue with your motor. That FE290 with a lift and big tires should easily get you pretty close to 25-27mph.

I'll check my speed with gps this weekend, feels like it's getting like 15mph or so.. I have a 6" lift with 22" tires. The only thing I messed with was the intake manifold - put a 90° one on cause the lift dropped it, doesn't seem like the choke works either - not sure if that would effect anything.. I do have to cram down on the gas to get it to go a little faster and still seems like it's not reving super high.
