Drive Clutch problem
1996 Club cart. The cart goes very slow. The drive clutch does not expand or contract when you push the gas pedal down all the time. Sometimes if you let off the gas and push down again, it does expand and speed up. Over a few weeks it got to where it would not at all. I changed the starter belt and the clutch belt and it got better, but still frequently you have to let off the gas, then push again to get it to open up. I am guessing the clutch is just going bad but just want another opinion. Also advice on rebuild or new clutch? If rebuild, which kit? Thanks for any help.

Re: Drive Clutch problem
The outer sheave of the drive clutch should contract in towards the motor, and the belt should rise up in-between the sheaves. It may just be some debris in it that's keeping it from engaging. The clutch comes apart with a three-hole puller and you can check it out. You can use the three-hole puller to take the moving part of the clutch off while leaving the inner (fixed) sheave on the motor, but it's not as easy to put back together like that as it would if the clutch were all the way off.
You can get a button kit for cheap if the buttons are worn out. When you do put it back together...DON'T lube it at all! These clutches are designed to run dry, and lubing or greasing the buttons or any other internal parts is not recommended as they attract dirt and dust. Here's what the clutch should be doing: |

Here's the button kit you would need if that's what you want to do:

Re: Drive Clutch problem
Thanks, mine definitely was not doing that! I bought the kit you recommended. I am hoping to install it this weekend.

Re: Drive Clutch problem
I pulled the clutch, cleaned everything, installed the button kit and put it back together. It did not make any difference. I am doubting whether it is a clutch issue or not. My friend had one doing something similar, it turned out to be an ignition coil. His was a EZ go and one cylinder wasn't firing.

Re: Drive Clutch problem
Club car DS only has one cylinder and one coil.

Re: Drive Clutch problem
Thanks, I know the Club car only has one cylinder, that's why I am unsure about mine being a coil problem. The comparison I was trying to make is that his still ran but ran slow with one cylinder firing. Would mine still run at all if the coil is not working or can a coil just be "sort of working" and cause the loss of power?

Re: Drive Clutch problem
I should also point out that I have put a new coil and a new ignitor on the cart over the past year. From what I have read, it is not uncommon to get a bad new coil so I cannot rule that out. Just trying to figure out what is causing the lack of power in the cart.

Re: Drive Clutch problem
So I did the compression test. About 140. I checked the plug for fire, it sparks, not super strong, but sparks. so I decided to try a new plug again, just in case. As soon as I put in the new plug, it fired right up and ran as good as new. It continued for about 3 minutes, then started missing, backfiring and cut back to the slow running it had been doing. Then, it completely died. Still turns when you press the accelerator, but would not start. After it sat for a few minutes, it ran slow again, then died very quickly again. If it were a car, I would say it jumped time and the distributor was bad, I am guessing that means it is likely the ignition coil but not sure. Anyone ever had this happen? Not sure if it means anything, but when I went to do the fire test with the plug out, the plug seemed very hot for the very short time I had turned it over.

Re: Drive Clutch problem
When it turns over but won't start you should try to find out what's missing (air?/fuel?/spark?). After the cart turns over for a few seconds without starting, pull the plug and see if it's wet. If it is, you probably have a spark issue. If it's dry, check your fuel delivery.
