spindle and king pins
uggg - I bought a front end bushing kit and it came with much more than I really needed but I bought it anyway. A couple items, I didn't really need was new spindle bushings and king pins, so I put them in anyway. The bushings bronze were absolutely painful to install; I used wood to Cushing the hammer blows, got them in, but wow, what a work out! Then the king pins wouldn't slide in, I literally had to drive the in also, I used the wood for that also, again painful. I was thinking "this just don't seem right". Now I can hardly turn the steering wheel, I mean - it is very difficult. This procedure seemed very simple and straight forward; what did I do wrong what do I do now?

Re: spindle and king pins
you should have used a large bolt and nut and washer arrangement to press them in.NEVER hammer a bushing or bearing in. Finish ream with an adjustable reamer after installation to fit the pin to a slip fit. I would remove the kingpins and than finish ream the bushings with an adjustable reamer. If ya butchered it up too bad ya may have to replace both again

Re: spindle and king pins
They must be reamed with a 3/4" reamer.

Re: spindle and king pins
A drill bit may work, never tried that. I got my reamer from a local hardware store.

Re: spindle and king pins
I used a drill bit long enough to go through both bushings about 10 years ago on my Carryall 2 with no problems to date.
Your mileage may very, Jimmie |

Re: spindle and king pins
When I replace bushing like that, I put the new bushing in the freezer and heat the eye of whatever the bushing is going into.
old school but it works well. |
