Default 1988 Club car runs only with light pedal pressure

Hello Gents!
Just got a great deal ($50) on a 1988 Club Car. Woo Hoo! Previous owner was frustrated he couldn't keep it running. Says he rebuilt the carb, replaced all fuel lines, the spark plug and air filter but could only get the car running in warm weather.
I got the cart home and it ran great for about 15 min, then lost power (half speed), then would only idle. Got it in the garage and let it rest. Now it only moves under the lightest pedal pressure. Pushing the gas pedal down any farther and it does not move.
I put a brand new battery in it is all I've done. I have yet to change the oil.
Should I just replace the carb?
Also, how can I tell what engine I have?
(I will post pictures once I hit my 7 day membership mark)
Thanks!

If the coil was bad, it wouldn't run at all correct?
Also, where is the coil located?
How much are coils and where is the best place to purchase?

When it turns over but won't start you should try to find out what's missing (air?/fuel?/spark?). After the cart turns over for a few seconds without starting, pull the plug and see if it's wet. If it is, you probably have a spark issue (possibly that coil). If it's dry, check your fuel delivery.

Coil failure tends to occur sporadically when the cart is warmed up to operating temps. Then after awhile it finally just dies altogether.

Actually, I took the seat off and the airbox off, sat on the edge of where you sit above the engine, and I pressed the gas pedal while holding my hand over the carb's air intake. The cart took off!
This tells me the engine is not getting gas right?

1. The gas cap on the fuel tank is screwed up. The gasket is falling off on the inside of this gas cap and it is pretty rusted. Where can I get a new factory gas cap? Or will any cheap replacement work?

2. Fuel lines are new and previous owner installed new in-line gas filter. Should I take out the gas tank and clean it out? With this fuel filter the carb should be getting clean gas no?

After I held my hand over the air intake that seemed to really richen it up and it ran great for another 15 minutes. When the cart came to a stop one time I got a big backfire (this verifies it is running lean for some reason). After 15 min the cart would not go any longer. Almost like whatever was blocking the fuel flow came back.

3. What adjustments do I have on this carb? Can I richen the carb manually? Is there a carb diagram somewhere?
Thanks.

Yes it sounds like it could be running lean.

1. Any cart supplier should have the proper gas cap, they're pretty easy to find; but I don't know that you need an actual factory cap. Anything that screws on should work. The cap on my '87 is vented.

2. These carts actually come factory with two inline filters: one before the pump and one after (the pump is that little metal thing on the side of the tank). Wouldn't be a bad idea to clean out the tank if you think it needs it. When it stopped after 15 minutes did you confirm that the plug was dry (no fuel) and that was the reason for it not starting?

3. I have the full Club Car shop manual .PDF which has all of the carb adjustment details in it. PM me with your email address and I can send you the information.

1. OK, Ill make sue I get a vented gas cap.

2. Do you have a picture of what the proper filter orientation is supposed to look like? I didn't know that there should be one before the fuel pump.

Also, I'll try my experiment again and, when it dies, I'll check to see if the spark plug is dry.

If your cart is stock, it will have the Kawasaki KF82 flathead motor. Also known as the FZ340. Club Car used these motors in their early gas golf carts from 1984-1991.

I have a turf II in my fleet with this turd of an engine, ran the same way, compression was low, valve guides were shot too. I did a complete overhaul with bored cylinder, new piston and rings, new valves and guides and it runs quite well now. Start with the basics, compression, spark and fuel.
