88 gas club car ds shakes on acceleration
My 88 club car ds shakes under hard acceleration or heavy load, i recently added a tourque spring, and tightened drive belt a little. Not super tight because i know its not supposed to be that tight. Before i tightened it i could easily slide belt off without effort.
Also it seems to have no ability, like my electric cart, to climb a simple curb. Any hints or help appriciated. |

Re: 88 gas club car ds shakes on acceleration
You're supposed to be able to easily slide the belt off with no effort.
Are you able to duplicate the issue in maintenance mode? Might be a clutch issue. Which clutch did you put the spring in? If you cart can't climb a curb it sounds like one of your clutches may not be working properly. You'll want to watch the clutches as the motor spins in neutral. The belt should rise up in the drive clutch (front clutch) and sink down into the driven clutch (rear clutch). If one of the clutches isn't working, it's like trying to climb a steep hill on a ten-speed bicycle with the chain on the little sprocket in back. Did this issue just start after you added the torque spring? |

Re: 88 gas club car ds shakes on acceleration
Ill have to look this weekend, cart is at camp. This issue seem to be this way before the new spring. I know when i watched it before, in maintenance mode, i have seen the belt rise on the front clutch. The shaking seemed to occur more after i added the spring, so i thought the belt was slipping. I know its not suppossed ro be tight, but i thought it was to loose. I talked to the previous owner who said he never replaced the belt and he owned cart since new. So if both clutches are working, could a worn belt cause the shaking? Thanks

Yes a worn belt could cause shaking.

The center-to-center distance between the two clutches should be set at 9 5/8".

Re: 88 gas club car ds shakes on acceleration
I've had a similar shaking problem on some of our older carts. The engine and trans are only attached to the cradle, but not to each other, the engine cradle flexes under heavy load which allows the clutches to bow towards each other slightly, and makes the belt slip and shudder. I fixed one by mounting a bracket from the trans to the engine. I put 600lbs on the back of it and it pulls from a dead stop on a steep hill without shuddering now.
Having trouble making power at low/starting RPM might be due to the carb not mixing fuel properly. When the gas engines run right they pull wayyy better than electric, but if the carb is dirty they can hardly get out of their own way. |
