Unhappy Melted Drive Buttons

I just installed a brand new drive clutch on my 2000 Club Car. Within two days use (roughly 1 mile of driving) a clanking sound was noticed at startup and only at startup. The noise is coming from the new drive clutch. I removed the drive clutch and pulled the clutch apart with a steering wheel puller to find small bits of brown plastic within the two housings. When I inspected the drive buttons the left side of each button was very thin/elongated and to be honest looks like they melted. I am assuming the lack of button surface on the left side is causing the clank at startup but why on earth would these buttons melt and only the left side?
