Question KF82 to FE290 Swap

I apologize if this has been covered but I've not been able to find the info I'm looking for.

I bought a lifted '86 CC with the original engine (KF82) a week or so ago..... drove it for about 10 minutes and the engine let go.
I tore the engine down and just as I suspected, the rod failed (at the crank) ...broke rod, scored
crank, destroyed oil slinger....

So.... I found an FE290....

I've read conflicting information.... concerning swapping the 82 for the 290.
is the KF82 CCW?
is the FE290 CW?

If so.... I'm assuming not a feisable swap??

I've got too much $$ into this cart to sell and recoup, without a huge loss... and I really don't (read : CAN'T) sink a ton more money into it....

Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

The 82 will be CCW ,If the 290 is not from a club car, it should be CCW also.

This isn't exactly accurate. Yes all Club Car KF82s run CCW. But factory FE290s in Club Cars from 1992 to 1996 were also CCW. If the motor is out of a 1997+ Club Car...then it will be CW.

You can run a CW motor in your CCW cart but your reverse gear will be forward and your forward gear will be reverse. And the gear ratios are slightly different and you'll notice that while driving. I wouldn't recommend it. Another option is to mount the CW motor backwards so that the clutch is on the driver's side and then use a jack shaft to run across the back of the motor and connect to the driven clutch. But that's alot more work to set that up (welding/fabrication, etc.).

Thanks for taking the time to reply...and the info.
Is there a way to tell from the s/n on the 290..what year it is? Other than running it, any way to tell if CW or CCW?

Thanks

You can send your old crank and a new rod out to J&M Golf Carts and they'll repair/remachine it for you. When my KF82 motor blew the same way I almost did this (I ended up finding a whole replacement KF82 motor before I did though). That was back in 2012 and he quoted me around $250. I'm not sure what the cost would be now, the website says to call:

Well... the 290 is up for sale....
Here's a good way to see which way the engine turns...take a look at the fins on the flywheel...sure indication on direction... ;)

Anyway....

I have access to a Mitsubishi OHV and Honda OHV... both off 5500 watt generators....
Both have electric start and both run CCW...
Question is.....
because the generators run at constant speed... throttle operated by a solenoid, etc...
IS it possible to take all that off....and run the engine I my CC similar to a go cart? Turn key to start, idle and accelerate using pedal?
Assuming some linkage/cables would need to be fabbed up.....
AND assuming the output shaft is short/tapered as the 290 and 82 are...(to run the 82 or 290 clutch)....

I'll investigate further tomorrow...

I would still add the starter/generator to charge battery and use lights...

Do able?

Anyone done the same?

Yes,it was very accurate. I never said anything about any year club car engine!

You said "If a 290 is not from a Club Car, it should be CCW also". This implies that if an FE290 motor came out of any Club Car, it will always be a CW motor. Had nobody else commented to expand on your original answer, the original poster would have walked away thinking that he would not be able to use any FE290 motor from another Club Car. And if the motor he had access to came out of a 1992-1996 Club Car, your post would have made him think he probably couldn't use it.

As far as I know, your post wasn't wrong in the technical sense, but it implied something that wasn't true by omission. It was inaccurate as an answer because it left out some important points, namely being the model years of the engines (as you pointed out), and the fact that there are CCW FE290s out there.

Granted...given that Club Car has been using CW motors in their carts since 1997, there are probably more of them out there now than the CCW motors.
