Smile Club Car Transaxle Questions!

Hello gents (and ladies) I normally do as much research as I can before posting. I acquired a late 80s club car rear end yesterday. (I believe a DS) it has the original Kawasaki 34x CC engine attached. However the engine has thrown a rod and is no good. I am retrofitting this rear into a 1972 T-D golf cart and have few questions.

1. What direction does the late 80s Club Car Driven normally turn for FWD?

2. Is the transaxle ratio directional? ( reduced gearing for reverse?)

3. The shifting forks are nearly seized. ( I broke N and FWD/RVRSE? Free) any tips?

You all have been great with the tips. And Cheers !

Update~ I found a thread stating that the engines from 84-92 ran in CCW (great for me!)
Confirmation would be nice

Cheers Again from Luke AFB, AZ

Thank you! I’m afraid after taking a closer peak at the driven, it is wound for CW. I would suspect you technically could just flip it around on the shaft and as long as the belts align would work instead of re-springing reverse settings.

1984-1996 Club Car DS carts all ran with CCW motors. In 1997 Club Car switched to clockwise-rotation motors.

Are you shifting the transmission with the shifter handle? Or have you removed the cable and are shifting it by reaching up under the cart to transmission itself? More often than not, the tough shifting in and out of gears is due to a rusty and partially-seized cable, not the transmission itself.

You don't need any tools to remove the shifter cable connection at the transmission arm, it's a spring-loaded ball and socket attachment. Pop it off and see if it'll shift into the gears.

If you do need to get into the transmission to free up the gears, the 1984-1996 units are not terribly complicated. You can remove the transmission assembly (the top part) from the rest of the axle and open the gear box on your workbench to check everything out.

Post a picture of your axle. We'll tell you which way it's oriented to spin.

I have some pics now.

One more question, are driven pullys directional? Is the spring designed to be torsioned tighter to activate the opening of the sheeves at speed? I have heard of people installing reverse springs but club car parts are a premium. I ran my 40 series comet “backwards” (outboard facing spring) without trouble, so I assume that principal will work. I am a bit pressed for space. [IMG][/IMG] Again, thanks.

You have the 1984-1996 counter-clockwise-oriented axle.

And yes, the driven clutch (what you are referring to as the "rear pulley") from the factory is directional. What makes it directional is the coil spring inside it. You can change or upgrade the spring, and the driven clutch will change it's directional orientation. If you order the hi-performance torque spring from Cart Parts Plus, it is unidirectional (which means it can be rotated either way). And yes, depending on which spring you install, the different tension ratings of each spring will open the sheaves at different rate, changing the power band, depending on your needs.

When I lifted my 1987 cart and put 22.5" tires on it I upgraded to the torque spring because I was having trouble climbing some steeper hills in our campground. Changing out the spring fixed that problem.
