Default How to extend drive shaft bar? Actually for a Troy Bilt Riding Mower

I would like to extend/raise the drive shaft about 6 to 8 more inches in order to raise the steering wheel.

I want to somehow salvage the spline end so I can remount the steering wheel.

Any easy and cheap ways to do it?

I was thinking possibly some sort of bushing and cutting a 6 inch rod and placing it between 2 bushings.

Not really sure best way to go about it?

This is actually for a Riding Mower but I have always had luck in here just wasn't sure where to post it.

Yeah that's what I'd do, cut the shaft in half, get a 6" rod of the same OD, two steel bushings with an ID that matches, and weld everything up.

So I cut it in half.... I was going to metal epoxy it and run a couple steel rivets for added support.

BUT I didn't realize the shaft was actually round rod and not hollow. So now I am trying to figure whether I should use some 1/4-20 bolts and criss cross run-thru a couple bolts.

The shaft itself is narrow at 5/8"....the steel tube I bought is 3/4"OD 5/8" ID and fits perfectly snug.

I just don't have the ability to weld and need a solution.

The epoxy is rated at 4K LBS but I don't trust it to hold.

Any other suggestions to go with it? :-)

If welding is not an option, then the sleeve solution will work. My concern with your setup is the 3/4 od sleeve only leaves 1/16 (.0625 inches) of material to bolt through. I think this may wear around the holes over time. Probably nothing to worry about, but if you had thicker material, I would consider it.

I can't weld either, I just take the stuff I need welded to someone who can!

I think with the epoxy the bolts won’t wear too much.
I was just hoping to go with rivets for ease.

But oh well:-)

IF it's STEERING related, I'll take better over easy anyday. The steering shaft on the EZ-YO was originally metric splined on both ends and I cut and welded a 5/8 36 splined lower section with a .120 wall sleeve welded around both ends, you could plug weld through the sleeve for more strength.

If I did take a shot at welding....

Would a cheap Flux welder do the trick?from HF?

I have only welded like 2-3 times in my life many years ago .. I think stick welding... it was like car battery jumper cables with a big sparkler looking stick on the end.

Just take it to a local welding/machine shop, have everything in place the way you want it and have them weld it for you. Probably run you $10 or less.
