Rotation Issue?
So i picked up a 1990 club car ds for cheap. The guy told me he blew up the motor but bought a used one from the small engine guy in town but never got it to run. Ive gone over all the wiring and its all correct. The Issue seems to be that there is air blowing out of the carb and the plug is dry, like the motor is spinning the wrong way? I know there are cw and ccw motors, This motor is spinning CCW when cranked. could this guy have gotten the wrong motor and miss matched the starter from the origional motor to get it to spin backwards? or is the motor blown??
Question 1: What rotation should a 1990 club car ds be from factory? Qestion 2: can i reverse the polarity of the starter without hurting it? just to see if it will run.. |

Re: Rotation Issue?
I doubt it's spinning wrong way but hey crazy things can happen on neglected carts put your hand over the exhaust and see if it's sucking in... If it's not throw a compression gauge on it could be stuck intake valve not closing and forcing air back out the carb on the compression stroke

Re: Rotation Issue?
1990 CCDS would be CCW rotation. They switched rotation in '97...

Re: Rotation Issue?
Seems like a Factory 90 DS would be a KF82 engine with CCW Rotation
Check Compression with a Compression Guage as it might be a stuck valve, if they do not close then no compression. Intake has to open to let air in and fuel, then both close for compression, then exhaust opens lets exhaust out, repeat. If air is coming back out carb, then it could be the intake valve sticking open. would suck on the intake stroke via the intake valve as normal, then on compression would blow out the intake, since both intake and exhaust should be closed. Gas Engine Timeline: 1984 (first gas model) to Early 1986: Used the KF82, 4-cycle, 341cc, side valve engine with a Fuji differential. The Fuji differential has a screw-type oil fill plug. Late 1986 to 1991: Used the KF82, 4-cycle, 341cc, side valve engine with a Kawasaki differential. The Kawasaki differential has a rubber oil fill plug. 1992: Started with the FE290 (290cc) Overhead valve, 4-cycle, gas engine in golf cars. Engine rotation is counterclockwise when viewed from the clutch side of engine (see 1997 below). 1993: Started with the FE351 (351cc) Overhead valve, 4-cycle, gas engine for utility vehicles. Engine rotation is counterclockwise when viewed from the clutch side of engine (see 1997). 1997: Started with the Unitized Powertrain (transmission & differential are combined as one unit) and changed the rotation of the FE290 & FE351 engines. Engine rotation is clockwise when viewed from the clutch side. |

Re: Rotation Issue?
I have not done a compression check but I did check the valves with a feeler gauge and they are both within spec. It looks like I have the wrong motor. the serial number on the motor is FE350D102981 Can anybody check and see if that may be my a problem?

AG9017 AG = DS Gas Model 90 = 1990 year 17 = 17th week of Production Motor FE350D102981 FE350D motor model 102981 may be the serial number ?? as for the year not sure since they made them CW & CCW from what i can find, CCW thru 96, then CW 97+ maybe a pro can decipher the serial number ? |
