Testing Charge Output of Starter/Generator

Im looking for a procedure to test the charging portion of the starter generator. I have a clone motor swap in my cart so I use the geared starter from that for starting. The original club car starter/generator is still hooked up and wired as it come from club car. Does it start charging once the motor rpm hits a certain point? Should I just be able to unhook the battery cables from the battery after its running and take a reading with a meter? My battery is dead now when I start the cart with the pull starter then try to turn the headlights on once its running they don't even come on dim, don't know if the battery is taking all the juice from the altenator or there just isn't enough juice coming from it to even light the headlights, at all.

Start it with battery hooked up and meter on battery post at wide open throttle it should read around 14.5-15ish volts

On the stock setup the solenoid stays engaged the entire time the engine is running - not JUST when starting. The same white wire that carries (+) power to the starter generator to work as a starting motor, also carries the (+) from the generator back to the battery through the solenoid.

I get a reading of 15.38v at wide open throttle to the new battery. Is this ok? Just want to verify everything is working properly so I don't mess up a new battery. I think the old one was just worn out, date sticker said Jan/2012 so I got my use out of it!

Yes that is fine they are designed to charge a little higher than a car (14v) for the simple fact of stopping and going on the golf course
