1990 club car ds gasser

Been a while since I’ve been here, I have a 1990 club car DS gasser that was running fine I’ll race season, last race in August was driving it down the return road and it died, hit the pedal, would barely spin over the starter generator and it was very hot. Pushed it back to the trailer, put a battery charger on it and was able to get it started to run into the trailer. I am assuming the starter generator failed? Any help on this would be fantastic thank you very much buggies gone wild for this awesome forum site,

Starter generator would normally not case the engine to die. It's got a magneto ignition, so the coil generates it's own electricity to fire the spark independently of the battery and generator. That said, I've seen a bad voltage regulator stick and cause the generator to run full blast: high voltage, lots of heat, cooked bearings and/or brushes in the starter generator. I'd do some more testing before replacing parts.

Meimk,mooncarter, I have not tried it again gonna drag outta the trailer this weekend, how do I check v regulator and starter generator? Remove it and check bearings etc?

You said you were able to start it to run it back into the trailer, right? If it will start again, have a volt meter on the battery: 1) See how far the starter pulls down the battery while cranking - shouldn't drop much under 10 volts. 2) See what voltage it charges once the engine starts - up to about 15 volts is normal, anything much beyond that is a problem.

Many other things could have caused it to stall (fuel flooding?) but these tests will either confirm or rule out the starter generator & voltage regulator. It's a starting point.

Charged battery, put volt meter on battery and voltage drops to 12.?? When cranking And then when running goes to 15.2 and pretty much hangs there, this was done on jack stands. As soon as it shuts off, the battery voltage starts dropping and then maintains at 12.84. Could it just been a fluke deal? Weather is changing here now but I am going to drive it around from time to time before the snow flies and see what happens thanks for everybody’s help

Can’t say what happened that one time, but what you’re seeing now is pretty much textbook perfect for a Club Car.

Ok thanks Like I said I’m going to try to put some run time on it around here before it starts to snow and see what happens now I have had the battery with a voltmeter on it all day and it is down to 12.71 V with the key off obviously do you think a battery might be failing thanks

Sounds like it just overheated. Lean fuel mixture or partly clogged cooling fins under the air shields will both lead to that. Some of the shielding can be removed with the engine in the cart. Take off the ones around the head and blow out the fins with compressed air. Do the same inside the fan cover and make sure the grille cover over the inlet is not blocked with leaves or dust/dirt.

I run mine IN the snow! 1987 Club Car gasser with stock flathead.
