Engine Swap!!!
Well.. just filling all you guys in who are doing/have done sled engine swaps...
for starters i got a 95 carryall 2 with the fe290 in it for 300 bucks ... put bigger tires on it and ran it 3 years at our mtn cabin. got two more of these things ... an 02 and an 00... so decided this one can be made into a toy.. so i got an arctic cat panther with a spirit 500 for free... from a guy who wanted it out... and it ran at that point... then it died while running in the sled.. and hasen't run since... that engine has no spark and i haven't been able to slove that problem... so i bought a polaris 440 twin carb for 50 bucks... ad am now in the process of mounting that up! check out my album of the project for more pics... but here are a few... post comments.. or suggestions.. i only get to work on it on weekends as i am a college student... however, ill keep all ya'll updated!! |

Re: Engine Swap!!!
yeah i was thinking that would be necessary... haven't thought that far quite yet... i was thinkin a vent out the side.. and and a hose to the fan to put it right on the heads... how many cubic feet a min do you guys suggest?... i really don't wanna be melting rings... i also need to figure out the exhaust issue.. i wanna keep it as quiet as possible so i don't piss the neighbors off... we shall see..

Re: Engine Swap!!!
i think a 12" electric radiator fan mounted to the engine just off the heads and then start read'in the plugs, you may have to fatt'in up the main jets.

Re: Engine Swap!!!
well. i got the engine completed.. and running... took the cart for a run it was fast.. 45 according to gps... in a short distance 42 up hill.. so not a huge loss.. smoked the tires like a champ!!! didnt drive it much as it was hot out... so i didnt wanna do any engine damage on day 1. however on day 2 took it out for a short run.. and lost power not far from my house.. had to shut er down in a buddies drive way.. pulled the exhaust off.. and metal fell out of the one cylinder.. like little bb's... it was up to temp... but not overheating... the good cylinder looked like new.. and the damaged one is all scored up on the piston and now the engine cant turn over without the piston top hitting the top of the head...
i heard something about the older sled engines (mine was a 74 polaris) not liking the ethenol in the fuel nowadays.. and that creats hot spots and freezes up engines.. is this what happend? any one have any idea!?... i dont wanna keep frying engines.. any information would be useful.. and any fuel treatment ides would be greatly appreciated.. as i think this engine is now trash... :(..... |

Re: Engine Swap!!!
my guess is one carb is running to lean, maybe some crap in it? you need to fatt'in up the jets in free airs to run right in hot weather! what color are the plugs. a fan engine with one carb is the way i would go. thats my two cents

Re: Engine Swap!!!
alright.. well ill chalk this one up to a learning experience.. and when you say color of the plugs pizzamaker.. i am assuming that you mean when i pulled them?... they were pretty clean with alittle bit of oil on the one side but very clean.. and the other was totally dry and gray... with a few pieces of metal stuck in it.. lol... but i will take your advice and see if i can fix the coil magneto on the single carb fan cooled engine i have in my garage...

Re: Engine Swap!!!
sounds like your one cylinder was running way lean for it to be grey.
