Another engine ID question
I’ve tried looking around here, but can’t find the answer I’m looking for. With the engine tucked nicely in the cart, how can I identify if my 92 DS has the 290 or 350? Before you state the obvious, there’s no sticker on the fan shroud. Are there any other stamps visible without pulling the motor? Are there parts specific to one and not the other? Identified in the vin?

Re: Another engine ID question
There is supposed to be a tag on the bottom of the engine near an oil drain plug with the model info so I have read. But more than likely it is the FE290.

Re: Another engine ID question
Worst case, you can always pull the valve cover. FE290 has adjustment nuts on the rocker arms to adjust valve lash. FE350 has HLA's so theres no adjustment on the rocker arms.
FE290 head is on the stool. FE350 head is on the cardboard. Disregard the blue tape, this head needs a new valve so I've got the spring caps and keepers taped to the spring so nothing gets lost until I get around to rebuilding this one |

Re: Another engine ID question
The engine size is cast into the base of the block on I think the left side corner, on the rear of the block. If the engine is in the cart, You have to get underneath and look through the back of the cradle to see it, and it’s probably covered in grime and dirt and hard to see. I’m not sure if or how you could see it on a 92 with the cradle design on those. You may be able to see if from the left side with a mirror.
Like CP said, you can usually tell by pulling the rocker cover off and checking which type of rocker arms it has. A 290 will have screw adjusters. A 350 should not. My memory is a bit fuzzy on it, but I think a 350 without ACR May have had screw adjusters. But 350s are only typically in industrial carts, transporter, trans-sender, or carryall models. And I’m not even sure if a 350 was even an option in those in 92. A standard DS will almost always have a 290, unless it has been swapped at some point. This is a terrible pic, but should give you the idea of where the stamp is. Someone had posted a good pic of this a few years ago but I can’t seem to find it now. |

Re: Another engine ID question
I've got 3 FE350's in my possession right now. None have ACR and all 3 are HLA equipped.
I have to wonder if you could take an ACR cam and install it in a non-ACR motor to take some strain off the starter/generator. Or maybe all thr ACR motors are CCW rotation since club car seems to be the only oddball I've seen that uses a CW rotation motor... |

Re: Another engine ID question
I have one 350 with ACR and one without, and I can almost swear that one of them has adjustable valves because I broke one of the rocker arms once while adjusting the valve clearance and had to dig parts off a junk motor I had in the back of my shop. But that was a few years ago, and which one it was I don’t remember.
I’m pretty sure if you swapped the whole valve train; cam, lifters/tappers, rockers, pushrods, then you can make either one be ACR or non. Possibly just the cam, but Kawasaki likes to re-engineer small details that might make it not doable without the rest. |

Re: Another engine ID question
The 9hp FE290 was used in most of the DS's from the early 90's and onward. the 13hp FE350 was used in larger mods... limos, carryall, commercial and heavy duty carts. The FE350 was also used in the higher model precedents as well. I think at one time club car had a couple special model DS with factory lift and larger tires (Lynx?) that had the 350, but otherwise I'm not aware of a DS coming with anything but a 290.
My DS has a 350, and should be finished soon |
