Default 1990 ds will not start after top end rebuild

Hey everyone,

I just did a fresh rebuild on the top end on a kf82, was super easy went real smooth, put it back in the cart all it does is spin and will not fire. Have spark, fuel and compression is about 170. When I pulled it I sprayed it down with engine degreaser all over then power washed it, I plugged every hole so no water would get inside. Dried it off dismantled it ran everything over a wire wheel on my grinder, sprayed down with break cleaner and wiped clean and let it fully dry before re assembling. Only thing I can think is maybe the timing thing on the wheel got screwed? Thoughts? Any help!?!??!! I’m lost lol

By top end rebuild, what does that involve in your view? If you think you may have bungled the timing I imagine you would have had the camshaft out. Did you line up the mark on cam with the mark on the crank?

Just pulled the head and cylinder head, replaced the piston and top end gaskets and that’s it, didn’t pull the timing piece or the crank shaft.

Now that you have all that compression..... are your crank seals strong enough to not leak and create enough vacuum for fuel?

It’s acting like it’s 180 degrees out of time

Did you ever have the engine side cover off? The one behind the clutch? If you did then the came and crank would have been free to move independently of one another. Maybe you inadvertently and unknowingly knocked the cam and crank out of time?

I know it may sound odd, but have you tried replacing the spark plug? Every so often a spark plug will show visible spark when being tested outside the chamber but under compression it still fails.

This image is showing (poorly) the timing for the balance shaft gear. There are also timing marks for the camshaft like this.

All I did was put it on its site I never pulled the side cover that gasket wasn’t leaking, there was little metal things on top of the lifters I took off cause I bumped them and they fell off but I put them back on, I rotated the motor after putting it back together and valves opened and closed like normal, last night exhaust came out the front of the carb and no gas was getting to the spark plug, put a brand new spark plug in as well
