Default 1985 Club Car - Choke/Carb Problems

I have 85 Club Car that I recently traded for. It ran horrible when I first got it. You had to push the choke in and out to get to run. It starts everytime no problem but chokes itself out. After working on it a bit i removed the card, cleaned it real good and when i put it back on i noticed the Air hose from Choke to the air filter was loose where it attached to the Choke hole. I removed and found where someone had ducked taped up about 3/4 of the honeycomb shapped choke outlet. I removed the duck tape and still spits and sputters when you give it gas. After removing the carb serveral more times to fix the bowl gasket that i found was broken and leaking I put a shop rag over the intake going to to the air filter where the choke hose attached the air filter. Doing this the cart runs great. So long story short if i restrict the air flow to the carb from the choke hose it runs fine. But if I remove it it will not run spits and sputters. Do I have a Carb Problem? I'm down to just buying a new carb but I hate to do that and end up with the same problem. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any Advice.

That sounds typical of clogged jets in the carburettor which can occur when the unit has been sat for some time. Blame the crappy Ethanol additives for this malaise. A carb rebuild kit should do the trick but i'd try soaking the jets in carb cleaner for 24hrs first.

The short answer is that I believe you have a carb issue. With it being a 1985, there hase been 25 years of potential "wrenching". Is your motor the newer style, or the 'flat head'?

I'm not sure if it is a Flat Head or not. Is there and easy way to determine? I'm pretty sure it is all original. Thanks for the tips. The carb has been taken apart and all jets and intakes blown out with compressed air and nothing seemed clogged. Any other ideas?

Low compression? Do a compression check and post the results.

You can forget compressed air dwg. The varnish residue will stick inside those tiny jets and be the devil to clean out, not to mention, the varnish coating is so thin that you can't even see it but it is enough to restrict the fuel flow to the point you are at. IE, you are starving the air to balance the lack of fuel getting to the motor.
This is very typical of Outboard and Motorcycle carbs which tend to sit idle during the fall / spring period.
In the past, I have resorted to using jewellers drills of the correct size to clear the jets but it's risky considering the potential for over boring the orifice and with modern cleaning solvents you can do the same job with little or no risk.

Get a set of welding tip cleaners(they are cheap) and use a ton of carb cleaner.

Go the your auto parts store and pick up the "Gunk" brand gallon can of carb cleaner, even comes with a little basket inside. Soak it, that's the only way to get the varnish out.
Is your air filter assy installed correctly?
Some carts use the air box design to restrict air.

This model doesn't have the "Air Box" it has the choke hose that comes off the choke button that connects to the air filter cylinder that is attached directly to the Carb. I did little more research from the guy I traded it with. He said he had a guy put a brand new carb on it about a year before i got from him. He said it pretty much ran terrible ever since the guy put the carb on it. The carb looks brand new inside and out. We have checked all the jets and they are clean as a whistle. Only thing I can find that is a little iffy is one of the ports where one of the overflow/air hoses hooks too seems loose and you can lift it right out of the top of the carb. Is there a chance that might be sucking air around it causing the gas/air mixture to be off? I'm going to do the compression test this weekend and post the results.

Thanks
