Question fe290 Compression reading?

Anybody able to give me an idea of some compression figures for a 94 FE290?

I'm getting 95# and need to know if I should rebuild or keep running it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

That 1st reading was taken with the throttle closed and a weak battery. I put my charger on the battery and cranked it with the throttle wide open and got 160#. I don't get the impression it needs a rebuild. Anybody feel differently?

mrcarter,

it's basically a pressure guage that measures the highest compression reading from the cylinder. You install a hose with a fitting in the spark plug port and then connect the guage. Then you crank the engine several times and measure the pressure. There is a bit more to it but that's the quick version. You can purchase this tool fairly cheaply at a local autoparts store and it will have detailed instructions. Hope this helps.

Scotty B,

I also have a 1994 FE 290, having fuel issues, engine wants to backfire at the higher end of the accelerator range. I suspect possibly bad fuel pump and carb. I wanted to start with the basiscs, if the fuel pump isn't getting the correct "pulse" from the engine crank, then that might be the problem. I pulled a compression check yesterday, both cold and hot, dead on 150 psi, battery was good, throttle wide open. Is this reading considered low, or is this an indication that I need to entertain a rebuild? Engine is original and never been rebuilt.
