Default clutch help!!!

hey guys. i got a kohler magnum 18hp engine and i need a clutch to mate up to it. shaft is 3" long with a 1" diameter...

i want to keep the stock rear clutch but i cant find the drive one for my club car. i have read that they rub on clubcars on the leaf spring mounts.. so what clutch can i use.. and can it be tuned to the 3600rpm this motor turns...

and here comes the budget card.. im doing this for my senior design project for college.. so i need to keep it cheap as i have tuition eating most of my toy budget but i need this to get my final degree..

so the cheaper the better.. and i will take used.. if one will work for me..

Good news is you'll get to do lot's of design work for this project if you want to use the Kohler engine and you'll probably get an "A".

Bad news is the engine rotation is backwards to use with the stock rearend on the newer Club Cars without turning the rearend over and running it backwards which will mean your forward will be slower and your reverse will be much faster than now (and probably lower your grade a letter or two). Lots of fab work but do-able if you want to put up with compromise(s).

hey deans.. yeah i figured that.. but i have a 95. and i believe that is pre engine direction change.. if im not mistaken... i had a polaris 440 motor hooked up to a 95 and it was correct.. itll be alright hopefully.. hahaha..

but why do you say that kohler will have alot of design work?

A 95 won't be bad at all, I thought you had a "newer" one like my 99 which basically takes the engineering degree it sounds like you are after or lot's of shade tree ingenuity. You shouldn't have much problem with the Kohler; the straight shaft will make it much easier to adjust to miss the spring mounts.... but you'll have to seriously modify or make a new engine pan to contain the new motor. I've got a 27 Kohler and a Honda 650 on the bench and I've just been trying to figure out which one to put in or if it's worth the pain. Just can't seem make up my mind. Enjoy!

See if you can find a comet 94C out there somewhere. A lot of them had the 1" bore and will more than handle the HP and rpm of that engine.

yeah i knew id have to modify to mount that engine.. i think it will be easier to mount this engine over that sled engine.. that required a totally custom mounting bracket.. what size shaft are you running on that honda or kohler?.... and what clutch... im really in need of a clutch idea here.. and im sure that the swap will be worth it to you...

oh.. and i discovered that the shaft was a 1-1/8"shaft.. so now i cant find a clutch that works.. that will operate in the 4 stroke range.
so whats out there in that size...

You could pull the crank out and for around 50.00 bucks a machine shop will make it what ever size you whant.

yeah i thought about that but i didnt really want to go that route... with my time restraint i dont have the extra time to rebuild the engine too...

WELL I HAD A NEW MOTOR TO WORK WITH BUT EVEN ON A USED ENGINE I WOULD THINK ALL YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE WOULD BE A GASKET. not really sure thought. sorry for hollerin but im all the way under this shadetree..
