Default Goes dead in reverse

My 2000 272 with a gas 350 dies and system goes completely dead when moving in reverse. It will not even turn the starter over. It will idle as long as you wish in reverse with no problem, only when moving will it act up. I have to put it back into forward and move to reset the thing so that reverse will work again. It seemed to happen when I was backing up rather fast down the driveway and boom, dead. Now I cant go 2 feet backwards without it dying. Forward is no problem. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have a bad mico switch, try putting it up on jackstands and making it run and check your switches with a voltmeter or maybe even a wire grounding out somewhere.I am sure it is something simple.

Are you talking about the micro switches behind the FNR lever? I did change the outer switch which had two wires on the end and one of the side. The inside switch, which had three wires on the end, I did not have but appeared to control the reverse buzzer from all I could tell. This is all very new to me.

the outside(closeset to the engine) is the netreeul/in gear switch. the back one(closest to the legs is for your reverse. dont forget you have 2 in the black box, ign kill and stater switch.

Yesterday I changed out all switches and it still would go dead in reverse so I kept digging. It turned out that the yellow selector behind the FNR lever must be worn. It is pretty sloppy when I reach in and twist it around. I would hold down hard on the FNR lever in R and it would run perfectly at any speed. Looking at the cams I can see how the microswitch is just on the edge of the lift part of the cam and it centered and closed when I pushed down hard on the Reverse lever. Maybe the FNR lever is out of alignment and is keeping itself from going neatly in R and the yellow cam is fine. It was late yesterday when I made it this far and the no-see-ums were coming out. I will pull it apart today. Parts are an hour away.

Found the problem last night. Some how the cable shift linkage became out of adjustment. Under a lot of dust and dirt I found threads on the shift cable so I loosened the opposing stop nuts and adjusted it almost a full inch! DUH Works perfect now. The micro switches would just barely engage when shifted in R so the slightest bump caused them to slip off of the yellow cam and kill the engine. Looks simple now but had no clue the other day. Maybe someone had taken the cable off for some reason at one time is all I can figure for it to be so far out of adjustment and yes the stop nuts were tight

I'll bet your not the only one in Wisconsin who has. I was driving thru the state a few years back and stopped in a small town.. a very small town and it consisted of quote: "3 beer joints, a hardware store, a grocery store and a post office." All within a stones throw of each other! The folks there cracked me up, great bunch of people. I heard that was the standard layout of small towns there.

Yeah... Yeah it is... Lots of hard working farmers around here!
(Thank god, I'm a city boy!)

BUT... if it had a hardware and grocery stores, and the post office wasn't a house...
It was a pretty big town! (pop. 500+)

Trust me, there are smaller towns then that!
The norm is: 2 bars and a church...
Bars for the men, and a church for the women! (to drag their men to after the men spent all night at the bar!)
