Default Anyone ever repack a muffler

This is for a my 1990 CC flathead cart as we all know these muflers and/or motors themselve are very loud. Reason I ask is when I rode/raced motorcycles and our exhaust was too loud, we would buy the packing to replace old or gone packing in the pipe. We would repack them on the outside of the baffle pipe. It would make a big difference in sound & definatley quieted the exhaust. Sometimes it would get too quiet to where we didnt like it that quiet. Now I know I will have to cut open the muffler and reweld it back together to do this. But has anyone ever done this? Also on a bike its a straight pipe so it was easy to figure out. Now i am wondering where to cut this open at to repack it. Maybe I am just wasting my time on this muffler too as it hangs down & looks ugly.
