Re: how much paint do i need
Depends on what is on there, how you prep it or seal it and what color is going on.
Some lighter colors have very poor covering properties. are you going to base coat, clear coat? Basic colors, black, blue, red will only need one quart because the additives like reducer/thinner, hardener, fisheye eliminater will about double the volume. Edit: you might consider talking to your local repair shops and see what they might charge to spray some leftover color on your two body panels after you prep it. |

Re: how much paint do i need
Yeah, thats what a lot of motorcycle guys do. They ask some painters next time they have a certain color of a vehicle they are going to paint to call them to paint what they need painted. They say its cheaper, im sure it is but theres nothing like saying you painted it yourself, even if you make a run or two here n there. Id say for the price of how cheap paint is now, do it yourself, give it a try as I am going to do it too. I think a pint is enough if it needs to be reduced and hardner added. It usually will double its volume when you add the other stuff. What I would do before you paint your cart is shoot a test panel and see how good of a job you can do. Your test panel can be anything like an old fender, hood, trunk etc or anything similar, too bad there isnt too many plastic panel just laying around like metal is. If you mess this test panel up, who cares, but it gets you some practice on what you need to do and what you did wrong if you did wrong during the painting process. I keep an old truck tail gate from a pickup for my test panel cause it was free. Look in your local classifieds or craigslist for people parting out vehicles in your area. This may be cheaper than a junk yard if you dont have a panel to practice on. Also I think a fender is better to get as a test panel as it has different angles on it and body lines like a golf cart body, plus it is very light. A flat tailgate is heavy and easier to paint but its not like a body that has different body lines and angles. This test panel will also let you see exactly what the color is gonna look like after it is shot. Sometimes you dont like the color after its been shot on your vehicle to only say, I shouldve shot a test panel first.

Re: how much paint do i need
I think you are on track with your Idea and I'm sure it will be worthy of posting pics of!
Even if it is not flawless you can still stand back and say "I Did it myself!!" Talk to the paint tech there and ask all for all the pointers you can, how long between coats (will depend on temp) If several extra lighter coats are better than fewer heavier coats (risk of sags or runs) And the next one will be easier and smoother. |

Re: how much paint do i need
I recently painted my Yamaha (http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-y...8-build-2.html) with Nasons base coat/clear coat. I bought a quart of base and a quart of clear and used it all. I did have to redo the front section due to a screw up but I don't think a pint would be enough. I did 2 coats of base and 2 or clear.
Good luck Fred Mc. |

Re: how much paint do i need
You may be right about the amount to get, freddmc... You should get a quart incase as I dont think its a big difference in price and incase you make a mistake. My mistake on telling you to get a pint, wish I could edit my post.
