Default driven clutch......directional?

is the driven clutch directional? i ask because in this post there was some talk about clutches being directional:

'Think this will work? '

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know that there's the big 'rear end problem' in post 97 club cars.

I've been trying to read around everywhere and the only bit of information I can come up with is it will work, you just need to put it in REVERSE to go forward. however after mocking it up a little but, it looks like it wouldnt work with the reverse belt direction, as it will be PUSHING on the top of the belt and not PULLING, like it was made to.

The solution? Rear mount the engine.

i'd like to hear what you club car guys have to say about this.

For anyone who doesnt know what hes talking about, its this:

It is setup for clockwise rotation. If you 'reverse' those diamond shaped pieces, the clutch should be set up for counterclockwise rotation.

I have talked to a few mechanics about this, and apparently its pretty easy to do.

Ill post results when I get something figured out!

Yes they are directional. The spring and preload direction is all thats needed to change rotation.

can you elaborate on that? What do I need to do, exactly, to rebuild the clutch to work in the reverse direction?

Sure, You would need to buy a new spring made for the rotation you are wanting to turn clutch, You install the new spring and pre load in proper direction and put the snap ring on and your done. You will have some other things to consider. What horsepower engine do you want to use? What width drive belt does the drive clutch use?

The more info you can give the better answers I can give to help you. I can supply you the spring depending on what year cart you are working on. I am also going to assume you plan on using the original drive clutch? You will also need to locate a longer drive belt.

You will need a new driven clutch. The clutch on the 440 will run a wider belt, Probably a 1 3/16" or 1 1/4". The Club Car clutch is designed for 1" belt. We could machine the Club Car driven to accept a wider belt, BUT there is no way it will take the HP and RPM of the 440. It was a clutch designed for 9HP!!!!!!!!!! Your talking about putting 30-50 HP and as much as 10,000 RPM

ok...here's what i have: 1997 club car. i'm using the stock driven and driving clutches for now. i have a longer belt after some searching. later i can go to different clutches if need be. so the concern is changing the spring in the driven clutch for now. what is the difference in the spring? is it wound in the oposite direction? is it basically the same spring that the 1996 and older club cars run in their driven clutches. i talked to a local club car shop.......but they where pretty snotty.
