Tighten Starter/Gen belt - solo
I need to tighten the belt tonight, but I won't have any help.
In the past I've wrapped a towing strap under the motor and pulled up on it with my left hand while ratcheting the adjusting bolt with my right hand. That didn't get it tight enough, and my back didn't feel too great later. What's a better way? I use the roll-it-on method for the drive belt, but I've never tried it on starter/gen. |

Not the easiest job to do due to the design of the S/G mounting bolts but you can roll on a new belt easy enough; I use a flat head screw driver to get it started then apply finger pressure while rotating the pulleys to get the new belt on.
Hope that helps, Chris. |

Re: Tighten Starter/Gen belt - solo
what works great is a pair of those vice grips with the chain on the end you just feed the chain around and tighten hold tight with one hand work wrench with the other................i have also seen a crow bar looking tool that was bent in a way for perfect prying of it to get it tight.....................

I was able to roll it on. No chance of slipping now. If anything, it's too tight. How much deflection should there be?

I know that if the belt is too tight, It won't turn the engine over very easy to start it,
I had mine tight enough, where it wouldn't turn over easily, I kept pressing the go pedal, and it blew the 10 amp fuse! So keep that in mind... |

Re: Tighten Starter/Gen belt - solo
that's tight!
Mine turns over nicely. Moderate pressure with my thumb shows about 1/2" of play. That's about what the serp belts on my cars feel like, so it's probably ok. I might just be used to it being too loose. |

Re: Tighten Starter/Gen belt - solo
I had to take off and put on my start/gen about a half dozen times just recently and I found using a lug wrench from a car and lever the bent tip end on the bottom of the start/gen and use it's mounting bracket on top of the engine as the base for the lever. Have the two mounting bolts pretty snug and the slide bolt snuggish, too. Put a ton of pressure on the lug and use a ratchet on the slide bolt which has the square part on the bolt to help holding while you ratchet that thing tight. Then tighten the two other bolts and bam, it went pretty easy for me. I was expecting something harder from all the horror stories but it went pretty smooth.
Twist the belt with your fingers around and it should go 1/4 of the way around and that's about right on the tightness. Just like a car. |
