Default cleaning tank

I was hoping someone could give me some info on cleaning a tank that has old gas in it and needs totally cleaned inside and out. Is there a chemical that will clean the inside of a plastic tank? I have heard of using bb's and cleaners for metal tanks but am not sure what to use on plastic. Don't want to melt it or anything.

And the fuel pump. Not too sure if it will need it too, or if it will still work.
I see what looks to be those thin screens or baffles in the repair kit. Don't know if those would be dried out. And one more question, is there an electric pump that will work on these? This is for an '86 with the kf82 engine.

I would rebuild the fuel pump if you can cause I think the stock one is more reliable than an electric in the long run.

On the tank, you can buy a hand pump to remove the old fuel first like the ones they sell at harbour freight. Cleaning the inside I have never done but maybe someone else can say what to use. I would just drain it, add more fuel and drain it again. Add a fuel filter before and after the pump to keep everyhting clean and see what happens. If the fuel filters clog up then you will need to clean the tank good. How bad does the fuel look inside or how long has it been sitting?

Mort the tank will clean up with some new gas and sea foam carb cleaner.
I drain the old add a gallon of new and stir it with an air hose tube CAREFUL OF THE FUMES see a sticky called fuel pumps in the yamaha section.

buy oneof those 1.00 spton pumps works great...........than i use a hanger with a cloth rag just poke the hanger thur the rag a few times bend and twist the end so you don,t lose rag and its kinda like a toilet brush...........than spray carb cleaner in tank and wipe around the whole bottom it picks up rust and other crap...........clean or rebuild/replace fuel pump change fuel filters and you should be good to go..................

I have done some of these but I always remove the tank from the cart ..... It is easier, quicker and more effective. I pressure wash them and air dry...... then rise with gas and reinstall....... never had a problem...... that old fuel pump is a keeper and well worth rehabbing it. Try just pumping alot of new clean fuel thru it for starters.......

Bump for reference later. Just picked up a '90 that could use a fuel tank cleanse:

If this is being used for reference then I'll also add to make sure there is an inline fuel filter. If not buy one and install it, they're cheap and easy to do.

Last thing you want is a flake coming off the inside of the tank and making it's way to the engine's carb. If the tank was really bad I would swap out that filter a couple of times after a few hours of use on each one.

You're right, I stopped reading that old post at "Cleaning the inside I have never done." I ASSUMED their knowledge base ran out at that point.

I guess I'm not OCD enough, and do make those types of errors.
