87 gas club car not charging
Can someone tell me how the check my charging system? My volt meter only shows about 12.60 volts when running. I opened the solenoid box and it looks like the regulator has been changed (there is aluminum shavings in the box and it looks brand new). I have only had this cart for about 8 months so I don't know the history. When I bought it the guy said "you can have this battery charger with it" which was a red flag but never had to use it. Thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Re: 87 gas club car not charging
with cart in maintence mode get your voltage meter NOW in your certain the battery is good than start the cart and with volt meter black probe on neg and red on pos. slowly rev engine it should rise up to 15.3 to 15.7 volts if its over that or under 13.5 chances are volt reg. is toast but 1st make sure your dealing with a good battery..........................

Re: 87 gas club car not charging
I have a battery load tester and when the no start problem happened I load check it. The battery had 12 volts in it and when I load checked it the voltage went to 4 volts in seconds. I put a low amp charger on it for an hour and it load tested fine. Would not get lower than 10 volts in 15 seconds. I checked voltage as you said, and when I accelerated slowly there was 14.5 volts and then I felt a click in the regulator box to which the voltage went to 12 volts again. Guess I'll try the regulator.

Re: 87 gas club car not charging
you may have 2 problems .................when you 1st start the cart the voltage should stay approx 11.7 so you might need a battery so make certain as for V.R. if its rising to 14.5 or so and than dropping it may also be going bad but theres really no way to tell until your sure you have a good battery........................................... ..................

Re: 87 gas club car not charging
My buddy had this problem in his '87 cart as well. It was a bad voltage regulator. About $30-$40 if I remember right. I don't know what the test procedure is, he had already had the starter/generator apart and put new brushes in it and still had the charging problem, so he moved on to the regulator...process of elimination.
