Default 2000 runs out of gas when hot

After it gets warm it runs out of gas. No gas shows in the filters. This morning after it had sat all night there was gas in the filters again and it runs fine. Is the fuel pump dying?

Question Re: 2000 runs out of gas when hot

Does it stop running or you just don't see gas in the filter?

Does it start OK after it's warm?

After it has run for a while (1 or 2 miles) it acts just like it runs out of gas. If you look at the gas filters they are dry but there is plenty of gas in the tank. After 30 minutes or so of sitting, there will be gas in the filters. I think it may be a venting problem instead of a fuel pump.

just so you know i have driven many a C.C. qwhere the fuel filters looked bone dry but never kept the cart from running now this dosn,t mean its not whats going on with you but for the heck of it when it quits check it for spark and if you have spark take fuel line off at carb crank over and see if its pumping fuel..................................

I"ll take the fuel line off Wednesday to see if gas is being pumped. Full day tomorrow. I can turn the gas off at the valve above the tank while it is running and watch the fuel drop in the upper filter. When I open it again the filter fills up quickly but this is when the engine has only been running a short time. I have not had time to run it long enough to get hot. Could it be a gas cap problem?

just guessing but if it is running out of fuel it could be several things, fuel pump, fuel filter, carb, fuel line, vent, cap, some of the above is a rare thing but happens i would just like to make certain its a fuel issue 1st.........you wouldn,t beleive how many members post about a fuel delivery problem that ends up having nothing to do with fuel so since we have to do this long distance its kinda nice to try and get rid of the more common things 1st..............................

If it is hot where you live, I think it is unlikely that it is a venting problem. These carts use very little fuel and when it is hot (and extra hot in the engine compartment where the fuel tank is) the gas is going to evaporate and expand due to the heat and should actually cause pressure in the tank. Now, I don't know enough about these pumps to say for sure, but, I would doubt that they are designed so that they will not function with pressure on the supply side. Easy to test, just loosen the fuel cap a bit so it does not seal (make sure your tank is not full when you try this so it won't slosh out) and run it a bit to see if it still does it or, better yet, run it till it quits, then crack the fuel cap loose and see if fixes the problem. I'm with 'shadowman', I would check other stuff first. It it's quitting when it gets hot, look and see if you have spark. electronic parts often breakdown when they get hot and work ok again for a while when they cool back down.

Ok, I checked the spark. Seamed like it was ok but replaced plug anyway. Same result. Replaced fuel pump this morning. Same result. Loosed gas cap after it stopped running no venting problem as I can tell. Ran it with the gas cap loose. Same result. I made it just over a mile today before it stopped. One time when it started to die I was able to feather the gas peddle and get it to go another 150 feet or so. I am in FL so it is warm here.

I would check and make sure the vents are open around the flywheel cover. Does the engine seem to be getting real hot?

does it seem to loose some power a while before it shuts down? I know you said you could feather the gas and get it to go a while longer, but, I am talking about it just does not seem to have the power it did when it was cold? The reason I ask is if it is overheating, loss of power is an indicator.

Did you check for spark when it was hot and would not run? I noticed you said you checked and replaced the plug, but, the critical thing is to check when it won't run. Just carry that spare plug you changed out and when it quits, hook it up and see if you still have spark. I am thinking coil, ignitor or rev limiter...
remember, just because it sparks when it is out in the open does not mean it will spark under compression. It is much harder for a spark to jump under 150 psi then it is in normal atmospheric pressure.

Also, once it quits and won't start, remove the hose for the air filter at the carb, give it a shot of starting fluid, reconnect the hose, try it. If it takes right off and runs for a few seconds and dies, you can look to a fuel delivery problem. If it still will not start, you know it's probably electrical like I said a second ago.
