Default fuel pump?

I have rechecked my fuel strainers and they seem to have no fuel in them when running. I pulled off the vacuum hose and found that it has vacuum as it pulses to draw fuel. Is this common and should the strainers be full all the time even when the go fast pedal is all the way down? If this is telling me that the fuel pump is junk as any one tried to rebuild them as it looks rebuild-able, I will Google it after I send this to see if some one makes a rebuild kit as the pumps cost more then one for my 1978 Pontiac Lemans. thanks

are you having an issue with it not running right? If it is running fine, don't fool with it. It is not uncommon for filters to appear as if they have little or no fuel in them. However, we both know the cart will not run without fuel, so, if it is running fine, it is getting fuel.

To check to see if it is actually pumping fuel, disconnect the fuel line at the carb and see if it will pump fuel into a little can when you crank it over while in service mode.

you should get quite a bit of gas in a short period of time. put your thumb over it and see if your getting any pressure, not sure how many lbs it should push, but I would think at least 3 or 4 psi or so, but that is just a guess and maybe you should have 8 or 9. Remember, these little motors don't use much fuel, if your getting a good healthy squirt-squirt-squirt your pump is probably fine.

ran it with the line disconnected and I got some fuel but not much and it seamed to just dribble in with an occasional squirt but not squirt, squirt, squirt just a small dribble. when first started it revs real high and then it seems to go to about 1/2 rpm as when first started.

i found a place on ebay selling brand new one for 29.99 free shipping i went that route rather than spending the 16 on a rebuild kit plus shipping. its cheap enough.

As long as you don't have an issue with a filter being plugged or a bad fuel line (it does happen once in a while) and you have vacuum. It is starting to sound like a bad pump. However, before you replace the pump, blow back through the line from the pump to the tank and make sure it is not obstructed. You could also take the pump apart and see if anything looks bad. I would not take it apart until you have decided the pump is the issue.

buying from a sponsor is much more reliable, and if its only a couple $ more. Sure beats an unknown from ebay. plus, they help pay for the forum, it's a no-brainer.
