Default No charging help please.

Hi there some help please from the Club Car gerus. I had a customer drop off his mid 90s club car with no starting issues. Some back ground is that he got it give to him so he took out the generator and got it rebuilt, he installed it and totally wired it wrong so when you tried starting the unit the large white wire leaving the generator was smoking and melting. I corrected the wiring so it will turn over and start now but it will not charge the battery. Any simple test to help me diagnose this? I would think I should have over 14v DC hitting the regulator but I have nothing.Could he have damaged the generator? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys. Shad

THE GENERATOR CIRCUIT (FIGURE 12-4)
The generator circuit consists of the starter/generator, voltage regulator, solenoid, the battery, and connecting
wires.
When battery power is first supplied to the starter/generator, the starter/generator turns the engine at low
RPM (approx. 700). Once the engine starts running, it then drives the starter/generator. At any engine RPM
over 1215 (3000 starter/generator RPM), the starter/generator functions as a generator, supplying charging
current to the battery. To prevent battery overcharging, the voltage regulator senses battery voltage, and by
opening and closing an electronic switch, it controls the amount of charge going to the battery.

hope this might help alittle.. sound like the gen or the woltage reg is messed up

You may want to read this thread on generators. It is long and much of it may not apply to your situation, but, you will find lots of good reference & test info on club car generators and charging systems.

Well guys did the jumper wire test and no increase in battery voltage at full rpm of unit. The guy said he just had it rebuilt but then he wired it wrong on the generator so when you tried starting it the white wire would start smoking. It must of fried something in the gererator I guess. Thanx for the help guys. Shad

If it starts the cart, it should charge. That is the way they work, the same windings in the generator cause it to spin to start as are used to charge. you probably have some other wiring issue. Please read that whole link I posted sat night. Don't waste your money on another generator until you find out what is really wrong.

hello guys. I've read the other post and I'm a little lost. I just bought a 99 club car and first the cart wouldn't turn over. I found the new batt. that the old owner bought had a dead cell. I installed a new batt. and it cranked and started up. I jacked the cart up and put a volt meter on the batt. cart off 12.3 volts. when running at high rpm's 12 - 12.2 volts. I unhooked the DF yellow wire and hooked the post to ground on the generator to ground A2 and ran it at high rpm and still same low voltage 12- 12.2. I also did last test and checked voltage at white wire at generator F2 and had 12- 12.2, then when I checked it at A1 it was about 11.8. I see you say if it starts it should charge orDoes this mean I have a generator problem and I should have it rebuilt?

That is exactly the same problem I was talking about on the one I am working with. My customer is getting his generator looked at right now. I will let you know what he finds.
