Default How do you start a typical cart

Sorry for the dumb newb question.
Is it the gas pedal that activates the starter?
I seem to remember it being that way, went golfing like 20yrs ago and that's all my cart experience. This one I have now is a torn apart basket case I got for free I'm putting it back together, it's 1990 flat head engine.

You turn the key on, select forward or reverse and press the gas pedal, that's it. If you have any questions about putting it back together just ask, someone will help.

Hey that's about what I thought, so at what point would you ever need to use neutral?
I understand the concept, lending to the general public and all, while golfing you jump in the cart push the pedal and go, then get off, hit ball and go again over and over, but for home use wouldn't it seem more practical to have a starter button, and have the option of a neutral idle? Sorry just don't have any experience but I will get some in the near future.

Most home use is just like golfing but some stops are longer than taking a swing
at that fracking little white orb so why have it idling all the time.
