help fe290 rebuild

hey, okay! Here We go.... Some of you know I have a 99 Carryall2 with a fe290cc motor. I got it going and it runs but smokes a little and a v.slight knocking. So I'm thinking of buying a rebuild kit and doing my first engine rebuild. What do you guys think? Is it doable for a person with tools and average skills? If so what about the piston size overage? What size piston kit should I order? ie: .025 or .050 over?

I say the bigger the better on the piston size but I'm not sure one the limitations. With your skills, I'd say that you can do it scotty.

And if I can't you'll help? Have you done it? I have good selection of standard mechanics tools but no specialty tools. What specialty tools would I need? Hone? O ring pliers? dingleberry nips?

I have read about larger piston and shaved head squeezing another horse or so out of the old girl....

How about those piston sizes? I need to order this kit....wanting to know do I need to rebore for .50 over? 25 over?

talked with a motorhead friend of mine for a while about this project last nite.....He says to disassemble the motor and take the block and crank to a machine shop for evaluation. They can 'Mike' the cylinder (as in using a micrometer) and tell me where it will 'clean up' at. Also they can check the crank and cam to see if they can be reused or what size oversized bearings are needed. Sounds complicated at first, but makes sense and a good machine shop is supposed to be able to help me understand all this... So Today I am working on pulling and dismantling the engine...

I talked with my CC dealer mechanic today... and he said 25 thousandths
depending on the shape of your cylinder walls...
and of coarse, you'll have to get the cylinder walls honed!

Yeh, that confirms what my buddie was telling me last night. He said you can't order the piston and rings until a machinist (or a v. gd. mechanic) measures the cylinder and determines at what size it will clean up...
Well, todays dismantle turned into clean up the shop and get ready then ...it turned into fix the weed eater and run it. And run it. Darn...
