Gas or Electric
I've been reading the forum for a while, and I thought it was time to sign up and ask a question. Not sure if there are a lot of gas or electric purists that don't cross over much, so I plan to post this same question on the gas side and electric side to insure input from both. Hopefully I'm staying within the rules.
I do not have my cart yet, but will be buying shortly. At this point I'm not sure if gas or electric is what I want. So I thought the best thing to do is give you an idea how I will use the cart and under what conditions. Also I can do some mechanical work, but not to the extent that I've read on some of these threads. So maintenance would probably be a factor. I have a small acreage with my house and one of my kid's houses on it, so the cart would be used some just to go back and forth between places and used to putter around the acreage. I also hunt some river bottom ground near my place, so the cart would be used to go there. Actually I spend a lot of time there all year. Round trip to the river and back would be about 3 to 4 miles, depending on how much driving you do once there, so if electric I'd need to be sure the batteries could handle a trip of that length. Also I live on the bluff, so at some point I will drop about 140 feet in elevation over 250 or 300 yards of dirt road. Of course it's getting back up that is the concern, not the going down. I don't plan to use the cart much if muddy since I have a 4 wheeler that I could use then. But as we all know, things change over time. As for working around the place, I'm sure it would be used some for that. But that being said I have a pickup with a blade and a 3020 John Deere with an 8 foot snowblower on it, so snow removal would not be something where I'd use the cart. I'd probably want to attach some sort of box on the back to help me haul more stuff with me when using the cart, but again it wouldn't be like loading a bunch of firewood or anything very heavy. So I guess it comes down to, is one better then the other when it comes to gas or electric. I understand I'm just asking for someone's opinion, but I don't have enough knowledge yet to have an opinion, so I'll gladly listen to someone else. Thanks for any help. Looks like a great forum, I'm glad I stumbled on to it. |

Re: Gas or Electric
You need a modified gas cart with 18-23 hp and hydraulic brakes in my opinion you are asking too much of an electric cart.

Re: Gas or Electric
By asking too much do you mean the distance I travel, 3 to 4 miles, or would it be the 140 feet elevation climb I need to make each time I come back from the river.

Re: Gas or Electric
I would definitely go with gas...You don't have to worry about mileage [just remember to check gas once in a while ] and the power upgrades lift & tires should do you well...

Re: Gas or Electric
You could do it with a modified electric but your description of cart duty left some doubt & just seemed to indicate a gas cart would be better for you.

Re: Gas or Electric
I agree with scottyb i have a carry all II with stock engine put the k/n filter and the super duty belt on it now sending the clutch off to be machined. Would like the power a 18 or 24hp motors have but this does everything i want to do and right now can't justify spending that kind of money so did the little things to give me more low end torque.

Re: Gas or Electric
GAS,GAS,GAS, would be no different then having your 4wheeler as far as maintenance and no batteries to worry about.

Re: Gas or Electric
Well since I have a lead on a gas CC that might be the way I go. Now I'll just have to see what it's like and how much.

Re: Gas or Electric
I would get the one with the biggest stock engine cause if you are like any of us, we all want more power for some odd reason..... but honestly the 1997 and newer CC gas carts have the clock wise engine rotation and these engines seem very expensive to upgrade if there is even an engine to upgrade too. Going from the 290 to a 350 isnt cheap for a couple more HP and is it worht it? There arent too many choices honestly on engines unless you buy a pre 96 CC cart then you can stick just about any small engine in it and be happy with the forward & reverse gear ratio setup.
And yes you can put any small engine in a 97 and newer CC but the forward / reverse ratio setup you may not like. Oh and to answer your question on gas or electric. I would only get electric if you need a cart quiet. Other than that, I think thats the only real advantage over a gas cart. |
