Default How can I setup my Villager 8 to run constantly?

OK, here's the problem I have....

The engine on my Villager 8 will only run when my foot is on the gas.

When I stop, the engine cuts out, but continues to crank until I depress the gas pedal again.

I know this is pretty much the norm in the Golf Cart world and I've learned to live with it by shutting off the key every time I stop

Unfortunately, I'm not the only one that drives it

Last week, my mom drove it while doing some garden work and ended up killing the battery because she let it continue to crank while stopped, thinking it was actually running like a normal car engine

I jumped it when I got home and it was good to go again until my Dad drove it over the weekend and did the same thing

At one of my job sites, they have a fleet of Transporter 6's and they all idle when stopped

How do I go about rigging my cart to run the same way?

That's a h*ll of a "gardening" cart you have there Rick!

No, it's not normal for the engine to crank when letting off of the GO pedal,
I'm guessing you adjusted the throttle linkage and/or the throttle cable?
if so... you need to shorten it a 16th of an inch.
If not... you need to open up the electrical component box to find out why
the throttle cable cam is not fully at it's stop, and not closing the 2 micro switches.

AND... I'm also guessing the job site 6's are "key start", whereas, your 8 is a "pedal start", different animals...

There is a way to get your cart to idle, but you need to get your throttle cable cam adjusted properly first,
and then maybe you won't need to have it idle!

Really?

I've had 3 of these things and they all worked the same way

My CC dealer says it's normal for these old carts.....

I'll take your word for it as it doesn't make sense at all to have it crank for no reason

I'm just stating my past experience with these and what my local CC dealer told me.

A couple pix of my other ones....

They both worked the same way...

In fact, the entire fleet from where I got them worked the same way

I actually asked about converting them way back when I first got them, but gave up on it when they said it was normal

Anyhoo, I'd like to have it run like a normal engine, so would shortening the cable be the only mod needed?

If it a pedal start cart which it sound's like it is one of the micro's in the electric box is either bad or not adjusted properly when you let up on the pedal one of the micro's ground's out the ignition to shut the system down. They are right make sure the throttle cable is adjusted properly. If you want it to idle all the time you need to convert it to a key start ignition which can lead to other problem's if idle is to high and not moving you will burn up the top bearing in the transmission because it oil's by slinging oil up from the ring gear. leave the cart as a pedal start and you will be way ahead of the game.

O.k.... here we go...

You'll have to open up the electrical component box to find out why the engine continues cranking,

Is it...
Gunk in the throttle cable casing?
Debris in the box itself?
Mis-adjusted throttle cable at the box?
Mis-adjusted GO pedal to box linkage?
etc.... etc.... etc....

heck, it could be a weak GO pedal return spring,
or maybe the GO pedal bushings are worn...

These are just some of the things you'll have to look for,
It won't be a bad micro switch, something is not returning the cable cam to it's stopped position,
and, any one of these things could be the reason it still cranks over!
You'll just have to troubleshoot it, and with some good luck, it'll be something that won't cost a thing,
and then, you'll be able to fix the other ones you have!

BTW... there is a "no cost" way to get a "pedal start" cart to idle, (mine does!)
but, if Mom and Dad are driving it also... it may not be a good idea!

Let us know what you find... I, for one, am VERY curious!

OK, a little update.....

I just opened up the switch box and checked each of the micro switches for continuity and they all checked out.

The one for neutral safety has been ziptied to allow neutral starts (this was done on my other carts as well).

While looking for a way to adjust the cable, I noticed a spring loaded idle screw on the throttle linkage backed completely out

Boosted the battery, turned the key, grabbed the linkage at the throttle body and adjusted the screw in to let it idle

At first, it was a little too high because the clutch was just starting to engage, so I backed off a little so she idles very low without engaging.

It actually runs a lot smoother than before because there's no start up lag

As for the trans bearing, how high is too high an idle speed?

I figure if the clutch isn't engaging, then I should be ok since nothing is rotating?

Do me a favor... (and yourself one to boot...)
Just make sure Mom and Dad don't let it idle too long! (engine cooling purposes)

I'm glad you got it figured out!
