Darned clockwise rotation !?
Can you guys help me out? I'm looking for a replacement motor for a 98 Carryall. The original fe290 is a clockwise rotation. I am not finding any small engines with a clockwise rotation to use as a replacement. Now I'm being told ALL small engines are counterclockwise rotation. Sadly Im beginning to believe it. Does anyone know what the heck I should do?

I strongly dissagree with driving forward as reverse and reverse as forward. The gears inside the tranny are designed to pick up oil in forward better than reverse. With less oil, over heating could occur. I did this for awhile and I ebded up blowing my motor up because I pushed it to hard just to get 25mph. I found a 96 axle and got a 21 Briggs. I could never be happier. Bolted right in. I think youll be okay either way, but I had much rather do it the right way the first time.

UUHHHHHHHH OK Your Story.
First I'll suit up with the flame proof suit. And I am not trying to hurt anybodies feelers here I'm just stating the FACTS. Backed up by having actually done this well over 300 times with many years of testing. First we will stamp out the rumors. First the gears are helical cut and do not pump oil any better one way then the other, Besides only the input grear is spinning backwards, The main ring gear the one submerged in oil is still turning the same way, I mean the wheels do have to turn forward to go forward. There are many people on this and several other forums running reverse for forward and even though some of them are running sled engines up to 100 HP and capable of 9000 RPM there has never been a gearbox failure that I have ever heard of. I personally have run a cart this way for 6 years now. Not only do I drive a cart to work 11 months out of the year I love to abuse em just a little. And frankly if I can't tear $hit up, Nobody can. Because I sure try. Now for the ratios. These are approximate just for comparison and speeds are based on actual test runs with a gps on a 97 up CC with a 18 HP Vanguard with the stock clutches we supply in our engine kits. Roughly stock is 12:1 forward Roughly stock is 15:1 reverse So if we toss in a set of 8:1 HS gears and turn input shaft the other direction the new aproximate ratios are now. New forward ratio 11:1 (23" tires will give you approx 30 mph @4000 rpm New reverse ratio 8:1 Yep thats right a little faster than stock in the new forward and haulin a$$ in reverse. NEED MORE SPEED??? 6:1 high speed gears same cart same setup New forward ratio 9:1 (23" tires 40 MPH at 4200 RPM new reverse ratio 6:1 Dont even go there! freeway speeds LOL. Again not trying to make anybody mad, Just giving you actual results We have done hundreds of both new and old style gear boxes, ZERO failures. Its easy to see now how Austin had problems with his first big block 15:1 ratio would top out about 20 MPH.. Not fast enough, need more RPM Scotty. Now motor is running WAY above its comfort zone. If no rev kit the valves start to float at 4200 rpm if you still don't get off the throttle your pushrods start to shorten themselves. Still dont get off the throttle and it all starts going real bad real fast!!!!!!!!! Better solution If the motor makes its peak power at 2800 - 3000 rpm why run motor to 5500 were its only making about 12 HP. Gear it a little for quieter cruising and bringing operating RPM closer to peak power. Hope all this helps |

How difficult would it be for someone with some mechanical ability and zero experience inside a differential to change these gears as you suggest? Thank you for your input. Austin, Tom does build a pretty strong case. Perhaps changing the rear gears is the key to his success with this? Maybe...? |

First timer Install about 2 hrs. Leave rear end in cart, take off rear clutch. Take pass side tire off. remove pass brake cable and bottom shock and both leaf spring bolts. Take off pass side of case complete with axle and spring. No gasket just sealer. Must be able to remove 2 bearings and a gear off intermediate shaft and press back on new shaft. We do it in under a hour, and use a small press but have also done it with a vice.
No shiming or anything, large gear bolts to diff. Take bolts out remove replace and install bolts. clean seal up and assemble. REFILL WITH GEAR OIL. And my favorite part. TEST DRIVE. |
