Default Metallic Rattle

I have a metallic rattling sound on my 84 DS. It usually kicks in a full throttle and will stop when I back off a bit. It will rattle intermittently when not at full throttle though. (no governor or rev limiter alterations) It's pretty loud and obvious and comes from around the engine or maybe the rear end. I checked every bolt and even the muffler bracket and it still does it. Any ideas? I even changed the trans/diff fluid thinking that was it. Found some other posts with similar problems but their "fixes" weren't what is wrong with mine.

My maint. mode switch doesnt seem to work. The cart operates just fine in "service", but not at all in "operate". While in neutral, I rev it up with the carb, it still rattles. If it is the clutch...is this bad or just an annoyance?

that all depends on whats making the noise.....if its the ramps or shoes or buttons in clutch sooner or later it will fail.......if its just a vibration than who knows...........................

I just repaired a badly rattling cart and as Tom suggested it was the driven clutch buttons that had gone south. You can visually inspect those very easily but don't rely to heavily on jacking it up or maintenance mode to diagnose it. In either of those cases there is no real load on the drive components.
Let us know how it goes for you please, we love solutions

Chris.

thanks for the responses...a question from a newbie at carting...can you rebuild a clutch or do they have to be replaced all together? Don't really want to spend $300 + on a new assembly.

Chris.
Are there buttons on a driven clutch? I had the same sound under the same conditions, and it WAS my driven clutch, but it was my understanding that the culprit was a washer/bushing that had worn and was rattling.

Yep, three of them. One each on the ramps and retained by allen screws. In my instance; when the rattle started I noticed one of them had disintegrated so I ordered the repair kit. By the time it arrived another had broken up (probably due to uneven pressure) and the thing sounded dreadful. I believe the "washer / bushing" you are referring to is actually a sintered bushing which would require soaking in oil and then drying before fitting. I'm a little hazy on that though since I have never had to actually replace one but it harkens back to my days in engineering when those types of bushings were used to lubricate machine spindles in place of roller bearings etc. Various types were utilised, Phosphur bronze, oilite were amongst them.

Ok, im stumped...To find this rattle, I took the drive belt off to isolate it to one of the clutches. With the belt off the rattle was still there....therefore it had to be the drive clutch because the driven wasn't turning. (so I thought). Bought a BRAND new drive clutch, installed it, and the rattle is still there...at high RPM's. I checked the exhaust and tightened it all down....still there...could this be something in the engine?
